My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Please contact Paul Slebzak (pauls@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet.looking for some sparkle in your life?

SPARKLE NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!!

Name:   Sparkle      Best Guess for Breed:  Catahoula mix

Best Guess for Age: 2 years as of April 2024     SEX:   Female

Approximate Weight: 45 lbs

Gets Along With:   Other dogs! We haven't seen her with kids or cats but she can be tested

Currently Living at:  South Carolina shelter; needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to get her freedom ride up here!

Special adoption considerations: Sparkle is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky!  They are part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs.  All dogs in the study will be placed at random, in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, this pup will be eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care.  Post treatment, we will work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test 6 months after treatment concludes, followed by a second test at 9 months.

Sparkle is a truly Lucky Dog!  She tested positive for Heartworm disease but has already been treated! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites.  Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. We are happy to talk more in depth about heartworm disease and treatment during the adoption counseling process.

Sparkle is Looking For:   Her forever home! Through no fault of her own, Sparkle landed in the shelter - but with her typical sparkle, she's closed the book on that chapter and is eagerly looking forward to her new one. The one where she gets her own humans for romps in the park and all the adventures they can dream up. Quality kibble and a cushy dog bed make an appearance in that new chapter as well but you know what she wants most of all? To know she's safe and loved and under her own roof.

In exchange, she offers adoring gazes and tail wags and and snuggles and unwavering loyalty. What do you say? Is Sparkle the glimmer you're looking for in your life?

What My Foster Says About Me:  We will update this once she has arrived in the DC area and spent some time with her foster

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The adoption process begins when you submit an adoption application either online or at an adoption event. The individual responsible for the dog you are interested in adopting - a position we call the “adoption coordinator” - will then set up a time to discuss your application over the telephone. The adoption coordinator will check your vet reference to make sure all current and past pets were kept up-to-date with their shots and medical care. The adoption coordinator will also set up a home visit with one of our trained volunteers. That individual will come to your home to ensure that it is a safe environment, to confirm that everyone in the home is on board with adopting a dog, and to discuss any other questions you may have about dog adoption!

Our adoption events are held each weekend. A schedule of times and locations can be found at www.luckydoganimalrescue.org.
