My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

🐾 Meet Lucky! 🐾

If you're willing to open your heart and home to a fluffy companion who requires a little extra understanding and patience and experienced dog-parenting, then Lucky could be the perfect match for you! Lucky is a healthy and sweet 5 year old male (neutered) Pomeranian (purebred, we were told) surrender, who is eager to find a loving home where he can feel safe and secure forever! He’s not for the faint of heart or first time dog owner due to his unique needs.

Quick facts:
~ Small dog, male neutered Pomeranian, could be purebred but no documentation exists.
~ 5 years old, birthday is not exactly known.
~ Healthy, vaccinated, no current known medical concerns, weighs approx 18 lbs and could lose a little weight.
~ Mostly apricot/flax color fur with shades of brown/black patches.
~ House broken, crate trained, knows/heeds limited commands, thrives with positive-reinforcement training and trust-building with his humans.
~ Playful, sprite, couch potato, chill, can get very vocal when he wants to play or needs something.
~ Currently being Fostered in Boston, MA.

Lucky’s specific needs require a dedicated and experienced adopter who will not give up on him, and is knowledgeable and skilled with work to rehabilitate his biting and resource guarding tendencies when Lucky feels disrespected. While in Foster, he has shown great ability to learn and bond with his foster family. He will need help with not being so picky about what he eats and wanting to eat what you’re eating. He’s making strides toward that but he’ll need more work with this!

🏡 IDEAL HOME: Lucky is looking for a happy, patient and structured household where he can feel safe and secure. Due to his anxieties, a home without small children would be best. Patience and respect for his boundaries are key to helping him feel comfortable and confident in his new environment.
🐶 COMPATIBILITY: Lucky enjoys the company of other dogs and is quite playful and appropriate. First introductions could be a trigger for him, so slow and supervised positive intros would be good. He does love food, treats, walks and squeaky toys, and has fun with his humans. He may exhibit some resource guarding behavior though if there isn’t yet a bond with you and you try to take his toy away for example. So his adopter should be prepared to work on these behaviors with consistent long-term positive reinforcement training.
🩺 SPECIAL CARE: Lucky requires a handler who respects his boundaries and understands his signals when he's feeling anxious or uncomfortable. He may vocalize or exhibit warning signs when he's not happy with a situation, such as being picked up in the wrong way or petted by strangers. Compassionate fear-free training and patience will be essential to help him feel more at ease and less protective.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 PERFECT ADOPTER: The ideal adopter for Lucky would be experienced with anxious dogs and resource guarding behavior. They should be extremely patient, gracious, and willing to invest time and effort into building trust and confidence with Lucky. A commitment to compassionate fear-free training methods and basic obedience skills will be crucial to helping Lucky become the best version of himself.

Can you be ready to make a difference for this very deserving pup? If you have the skills and compassion to help Lucky live his best life, he's eagerly waiting to meet you!

Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most of the dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label.

We expect that all adopted dogs will enroll in a formal dog training class with their new owners. Obedience and training classes are an excellent way to learn more about your newly adopted dog, gain handling and training experience, and improve your relationship with your pet.

Additional adoption info

The Adoption Process
- Fill out an application for your potential new family member
- One of our volunteers will review the submitted application and do their best to respond within 48 hours
- We will check personal and veterinary records (if applicable)
- After checking references, we will then look to schedule a home visit (for dogs only)
- If the animal is a good match, then a meet and greet will be setup – usually at the foster home or the Cambridge or Millbury PetSmart adoption centers
- We like to have all family members attend
- Finally, the last step if to complete the adoption paperwork and to bring your new family member home

Here are a few items for people to consider before deciding to adopt:

- Renters must have their landlord’s permission
- Adopters must be 21 years of age or older
- All adoptive homes must be stable, supportive, and capable to meet all veterinary and financial needs of the animal
- Some adoptions will require adopters to enroll the dog in training classes as a condition of adoption, however we encourage training for ALL adopted dogs.
- Kittens younger than 6 months must be adopted with another kitten/cat or go to a home with a resident cat for socialization
- There may be additional adoption requirements for puppies (puppy socialization classes, someone home during the day, etc)

Go meet their pets

All of our pets for adoption are in foster homes. You must fill out an adoption application before being considered for adoption. Once your application is received, the foster parent will contact you to discuss whether the animal would be a good fit for your home and set up a meet between your family and the pet.

We also house several cats in our adoption center at the Cambridge PetSmart. Stop by to play with them Monday-Friday from 5pm-8pm and all day Saturday and Sunday!
