My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

How to Adopt Me:  Contact us at HPHS@Ymail.com and ask for an ADOPTION APPLICATION

Max is a happy-go-lucky 15 month old Border Collie seeking adventure and some friends to chase.   He walks well on lead and gets along well with other dogs and even dog-savvy cats!  He absolutely adores people and should do well with children 8 years old and up.  He is learning to fetch and his favorite canine buddies are other Border Collies as they will understand his play style best.

Max's adoption fee is $180, which pays for his shots, neuter and micro-chipping. If you are interested in Max, please email HPHS@Ymail.com with some information about your household and the activities you plan for your dogs.  Max will need a fenced yard and an active and engaging family as adventure is his middle name!

HPHS supports spay/neutering of all pets. Adopt from us and your new pet is spayed or neutered.  They are up to date with their shots as well.   Discount spay/neuter vouchers are also available at the Second Chance Thrift Store. Income verification is necessary tp receive the voucher.

Additional adoption info

The High Plateau Humane Society is primarily concerned with finding the most appropriate home for our cats and dogs. Please understand that when we ask questions we are not trying to be nosey, we are simply trying to get to know you so we can be sure the animal you are interested in is really the right animal for you, and that you have the tools and resources needed to care for him or her. So, during our interview process we may ask you for references, or conduct a home check to be sure your home environment is appropriate for the animal. We appreciate your patience with us, and your willingness to share information. Thank you for considering one of our foster animals.

Go meet their pets

CATS: Come visit our Second Hand Thrift Store to see our adoptable cats Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM. Call ahead to be sure we are open, as we occasionally need to close due to staffing issues.

DOGS: Call our Dog Program Coordinator, Jenn Andersen at 530-708-2377 if you are interested in meeting one of the adoptable dogs. They are all fostered & so special arrangements must be made to see them.

More about this rescue

The High Plateau Humane Society (HPHS) is an all-volunteer organization that was founded in 1987. We rescue hundreds of dogs and cats each year in Modoc County, California, and (like most rescues) we do not receive any funding from the Humane Society of the United States. Our funding primarily comes from our adoption fees (which pay for about 70% of the medical costs for our average cat or dog), proceeds from our thrift store, and from donations from people like YOU! We are the only organization in Modoc County dedicated to rescuing all adoptable dogs that come through our area shelters. If we don't take them, they are euthanized, and we can't take them if we don't have the funds or foster homes to support them. So, your donations, as well as adoptions, really do save lives! Thank you for your support.
