Meet Locust, a charming cattle dog mix with a heart full of love and a spirit ready for adventure. Though he may be a bit shy when you first meet, give him a little time and you'll uncover a loyal companion eager to share in all of life's great adventures. Locust is currently mastering the art of the leash, showing great promise with each day that passes. His intelligence and eagerness to learn make him a delightful student, embodying the keen, alert nature of his breed.
Locust's heritage as a cattle dog shines through in his play; he has a unique herding play style that is both fascinating and endearing. Because of this, we believe Locust would thrive best in a home that understands and appreciates the nuances of his breed. A meet and greet with any potential canine siblings is essential to ensure a perfect match, allowing for a harmonious blend of personalities and play styles. Locust's ideal playmate would be one who understands his cues and can engage in his spirited, herding-based games.
Given Locust's herding instincts, a home without small children would be best. He is not one to shy away from a loving family, but his instinct to herd might be too much for little ones to understand. Instead, Locust dreams of a home where he can flourish under the care of individuals or a family with older children or teens, who can respect his space as he learns and grows. In return, Locust promises a lifetime of loyalty, cuddles, and countless adventures. If you have the knowledge and heart for a breed as special as Locust, and you're ready to embark on a rewarding journey with this remarkable dog, we encourage you to reach out. Locust is waiting to meet his forever family-could that be you?

More about this shelter
The Cabarrus County Animal Shelter is one of the core responsibilities of Cabarrus County Animal Control, a division of the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office. The shelter is an open admission shelter, which means we do not turn away any animal in need. We are a public facility that provides safe temporary shelter for homeless animals while the staff searches for permanent homes for the animals through community adoption or transfers to Rescue Partners. The animal shelter also provides a variety of other services for the community. The animal shelter is NOT a pet boarding facility. While the shelter is open admission, we do require pre-scheduled appointments for all owner surrenders. Please see our hours of operation for details.
Staff at the Cabarrus County Animal Shelter is committed to placing safe and healthy animals in the community by searching for appropriate permanent homes for adoptable animals. We work with approved Rescue Partners locally and nationally to place animals with workable behavior concerns and treatable medical issues with groups with the resources to take on those specific cases. To determine if an animal is adoptable, shelter staff must rule out any underlying medical conditions and/or temperaments that present safety risks to the community. Euthanasia is a last resort. When necessary, euthanasia is carried out with respect to the animals by a Certified Euthanasia Technician following best-practice guidelines set by the NC Department of Agriculture. It is important to Cabarrus County that all animals at the shelter receive care and compassion.
