My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Nebo is a 4-year-old lab mix who is very happy to be in a nice warm home in Minnesota after spending a long time living on the streets in Mexico.  Those streets aren’t safe for a pup, and something happened to injure one of Nebo’s front legs.  It seems to have healed wrong, but he doesn’t let that slow him down.  He gets around very well and can run, jump and play without any trouble.  Our vet has seen him and is considering whether to explore options.  At this point, it doesn’t slow him down at all and never causes him pain.

Despite his history and what he’s overcome, Nebo is an absolute sweetheart who loves people and is happiest when he’s sharing the love.  He loves to cuddle next to them on the sofa and would be thrilled to be able to nap or sleep with his humans.  He does go into his kennel immediately when asked and will sleep quietly all night long.  Nebo has never soiled his kennel.  At about 32 lbs, he is a great size for smaller homes or apartments.

Nebo is currently in a foster home with several dogs of all sizes and a couple cats.  He gets along well with the dogs, although he did need some coaching to get along with one of them.  He perceived the other dog’s advances as threats, when realistically, the other dog was a young, larger puppy who just didn’t know how to initiate play.   Once both dogs learned how to interact appropriately with one another, they got along much better.  Nebo isn’t great with cats.  He doesn’t hurt them, but he chases them down and tries to corner them whenever he sees them.

Nebo is almost fully housetrained.  He will still lift his leg once in a while, but he stops and runs for the door as soon as he is corrected.  Belly bands have helped with this.  He stands very still, while allowing us to put his band on, making it very easy to manage.

Nebo knows several commands, including sit, stay, come (he will not leave the yard unless he is with one of his humans!), and will do almost anything for a treat.  He is still very excited to learn new things.

Nebo loves to play ball and will bring it back time and time again.  He plays well with toys on his own but isn’t a big fan of sharing.  If other dogs respect that, he will happily play alongside them rather than with them.  He also enjoys chew toys and will spend all day chomping on a yak chew or a bully stick.

This boy has the confidence and personality to fit into many households.  He would do fantastic as an only pet, but would also do well with other dogs.  We feel he could be trained to leave cats alone as well, but that would take some time.  If you are looking for a mid-sized buddy who is fully housetrained and almost potty trained, long past the puppy behaviors and ready to be your best friend, please consider Nebo!
