My story

Meet Shiro, an independent little guy who doesn’t need or want a ton of coddling. He takes in life at a more leisurely pace, enjoying the comforts of lounging when he can, and always ready to be alert and on point. Per his past owner, his social circles have included making friend with other small dogs and cats and he even lived with a 70 lbs German Shepherd. He especially likes the human ladies. If you’re looking for a low fuss companion for you or your pet, make sure Shiro is on your list to meet. Shiro is ready to get on with his life and move beyond the bars of shelter life. He`s advocated for by his friends and fans including ClassicCaninesATX who is working to find land bridges home for displaced mature great pets that took a fork in life due to hardship.

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats & kittens up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
$30 small animals
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

Go meet their pets

The Austin Animal Center is open for adoptions every day from 11:00am to 7:00pm. We're closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Thanksgiving Day to give our staff some time with family.
Interested adopters should come to the shelter during business hours to meet with a counselor start looking for a pet who'll be a good fit. Our counselors and volunteers are happy to help with that process.
