My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!
Charlie is a 13-year-old male Shih Tzu mix that weighs 9 pounds. He has beautiful curly white and brown fur. Charlie’s owner died and a family friend cared for him for a while, but was eventually surrendered to our rescue due to the family having 3 large dogs who intimidated and overpowered him. Charlie has no teeth therefore he eats small kibble or moist dog food and soft treats. He has some hearing loss and gets startled easily if touched from behind.
Charlie is a loving, happy guy. He follows his people and wants to be by you or at least always be able to see you. He spends his day sleeping near his foster family while they work at home. Charlie shows no interest in playing with toys. He enjoys going outside and loves a fenced in yard. He is house trained but needs to be let out every few hours. His foster parents make sure to let him out before leaving the house and frequently throughout the day. He sleeps contently in his own bed at night but would love to sleep in his people’s bed if given the opportunity. Charlie enjoys looking out the patio window, scouting out invading birds and squirrels on the deck. He doesn’t bark much when his foster family is around but gets very excited when his foster family returns home. When the weather is warm, he likes to sit out on the deck with his foster family. He walks well on the leash and loves to go to the park.
Charlie has had frequent ear infections in the past and his adopters must clean his ears once a week to prevent infection. An adults only home would suit him perfectly, although older children (older than 12 years), who are respectful, would be okay. Charlie has no teeth, so he eats small kibble or moist dog food and soft treats. He has some hearing loss and gets startled easily if touched from behind. He would be okay with another small dog in the house, and may rely on the other dog if his hearing continues to diminish.
These are the requirements for Charlie’s new family:
• A stay-at-home family, or a family where someone is home most of the day. Older children would be okay.
• A fenced yard is a plus but not a requirement. He will explore the outdoors but should not be left alone outside.
• A family that is willing to clean his ears once a week.
• A family who lives within 30 miles of the Twin Cities.
While Charlie is 13 years old, he will still bring many years of love and companionship to a family who will open their hearts to a senior dog. We hope his new family will plan to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion every year in September.
Charlie is neutered, current on vaccinations, and on heartworm and flea & tick preventative medication. Charlie’s adoption fee is $75.00 plus $6.39 sales tax for a total cost of $81.39.
To meet Charlie, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at PETCO in Southtown Center in Bloomington.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The first part of the adoption process is to submit an APPLICATION FOR ADOPTION online at www.shihtzurescuemn.org.

Once you have completed and submitted the application, it will be reviewed by an application committee who will decide if it is an appropriate application for one of our Shih Tzus or for a particular dog in which you are interested.

The application gives us an idea of your living situation, your family, your lifestyle, and what you are really looking for in a companion. As everyone knows, the requirements and expectations for dogs all vary, and like humans, each one has its own character and personality. With regards to dogs, some are mellow and just need a place where they can be a companion to people and relax and live out their lives. Others are more active or like the companionship of another dog. But they all need to be in homes where they are understood and loved unconditionally.

After reviewing the adoption application, an adoption coordinator will call for a phone interview to chat further about the dog and you. Upon completion of the phone interview we check your references to make sure that you are, in fact, who you represent yourself to be as both a person and prospective dog parent.

The next step is to verify your living situation. Once again, all dogs have different requirements, an example being that some dogs really need to go to homes where a fenced yard is available, whereas others are fine without a fenced yard. We also need to make sure that you are the owner of the home that you reside in, and if you are not, then we need to get consent from your landlord that the dog you are looking to adopt will be allowed in your home.

Finally, we will do a visit to your home, where all family members must be present, and you will get to meet the dog you are considering. Hopefully the visit will tell us that this is the match we hope it will be! At that point, if it is true love, then you may welcome your fantastic new Shih Tzu into your home for the beginning of what we are certain will be a wonderful, loving forever relationship. Please understand that it is the decision of the foster parent as to whether the family, home and dog are an appropriate match.

We require that you sign our adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee for the dog. All dogs adopted from us are fully vetted (vaccinated, heartworm tested, dewormed (if necessary), and spayed/neutered). The adoption fee is based on the age of the dog and ranges from $100 to $400.

More about this rescue

Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota (STRMN) is an all volunteer organization with a mission to Rescue, Rehabilitate, and Re-Home Shih Tzus and Shih Tzu mixes who are in need of loving homes. We believe every dog should have a second chance, and should be treated as a living creature with respect, dignity and compassion. While our volunteers are located in Minnesota, we are committed to rescuing Shih Tzus from other states as well. As long as we have an available foster home, we will rescue and care for another Shih Tzu. STRMN is a 501c3 charitable, non profit organization. All donations to STRMN are tax deductable and 100% of donations go toward the care and comfort of our rescued dogs.
