His foster says: I'm loving my time with Denver! He has made himself at home incredibly fast. Immediately he chose his favorite spot on the couch, which is where he spends most of his day. This man is an absolute chiller and the most cuddly dog I've ever been around. He's definitely a lazy dog but has bursts of puppy-like playtime before returning to bed and is more than happy to take long strolls and will even jog alongside you if you want to pick up the pace. During playtime, stuffed toys are his favorite…for the 5 minutes before he destroys them. He is fantastic at knowing what toys are his and what are not, and he hasn't chewed on anything he wasn't supposed to.
Outside he takes care of his business right away. He seems to be potty trained but had a few accidents as he got settled and learned the boundaries; now he's accident free. I live in Stuytown so our walks are quiet and he does fantastically; however, on busier/main streets he does get a little unsettled by loud noises but is getting better and better with that.
Denver is an old soul and he is so trusting with humans. He greets everyone by gently placing his big head on them for some scratches or pets. He hasn't met someone who he doesn't like and I haven't met someone who doesn't absolutely fall in love with this gentleman. His demeanor is incredible! Denver acts as if he is thankful for every single day and communicates how much he appreciates all the love and care he receives. Denver is so special and he would be able to step right into a new family and have them wishing they were able to find him sooner.
Denver remains super friendly and cuddly with new people. He spent the last two days meeting new human friends and sleeping on laps as we watched sports. I'm still working on keeping him off my bed - but as much as it pains him, he's slowly learning he can't spend every moment with his head resting on me.
He seems to be doing well at being home alone, however only if he can't get his hands on any food. He will attempt to find anything he can get his hands on - so don't leave things out you don't want him to eat. Beyond that, he gets left home for 20ish minutes every morning and it seems he cuddles up and goes back to bed. I’ve left him a few times for about an hour and a half and he seems fine with it.
To that point, Denver gets incredibly excited about food, but is learning more and more manners every day and is showing improvements in impulse control. He isn't crate-trained and cries in the crate. He also loves to sleep in my bed at night. I, however, don't love that - so that's definitely something we are working on. He 100% is my shadow and needs to be by my side. He falls asleep in his bed but as soon as he realizes I'm not there he jumps up with me. I'm working on setting the bed as a boundary. Denver has no issue sleeping through the night.
What is a Pit Bull Terrier?
Pit Bulls are actually not they’re own recognized breed; they are made up of Staffordshire Serriers (‘staffies’) and Bull Dogs or Bull Terriers. While every pitbull looks similar with their naturally muscular builds, large blocky heads, and often shorter snouts, every pitbull actually looks different from the other. They are highly obedient, extremely trainable, and (often) treat-motivated. They are also very loving and devoted companions with goofy and playful personalities.
What does owning this dog entail?
Like many of their canine relatives, Pit Bulls are high-energy, job-oriented dogs. Expect 90 minutes of consecutive exercise a day. They love to please but definitely require both physical and mental stimulation (every heard of bully chews? lol). They are extremely loyal and with training and the exercise they need they can be one the best pets you’ll ever have.
Energy Level? Low -- couch potato, gentle walks
Cuddle Bug Level? High -- wants to be in your lap pretty much all the tim
Potty Trained? Yes -- no accidents
Comfy with strangers? Yep -- Wants to be friends with everyone who walks by, super social butterfly, loves anyone who will stop to say hello.
Good with Children? (ALWAYS requires supervision) Hasn't had any interactions but all things in his current foster home point to a yes
Good with Other Dogs? Still working on it -- needs some more socialization training and a little protective of his space. Fine on a leash if the other dogs are not aggressive towards him
Good with Other Animals? (cats, small pets, etc.) Sort of -- seems to chase squirrels and birds and comes on a little strong so probably not a good match for a home with cats, rabbits, etc.
Mouthy Behavior? Low - Little to no interest in chewing on stuff or putting things in its mouth that aren’t food. Doesn’t try to chew on hands, feet, etc. during playtime, doesn’t wreck your stuff -- only chews on appropriate things like dog toys and bones.
Leash Manners? Getting the Hang of it: Probably hasn’t been on a leash much in its life but he/she is figuring it out. Might be a mild puller but responds to correction. *much improved!
Jumping on People to Say Hi? Medium - Jumps up only on people the dog knows when really excited. Stops with correction.
Separation Anxiety? Medium - Might cry for a few minutes when you first leave the house but settles pretty quickly and has no problem being left alone
How They Ended Up With Social Tees: This pup was originally left anonymously at a high volume shelter in TX where they were at risk of euthanasia. Our rescue partner based down there pulled them, had their initial veterinary care done, and transported them to NYC. While in Social Tees care, they are kept in attentive and loving foster homes. Many dogs are rescued from the south because the pet overpopulation problem there is much worse than it is in the northern parts of the country. This seems to be because far fewer people are having their pets spayed/neutered in the south, the climate is warmer so animals are reproducing year round, and the human population in these areas is less dense so there aren’t enough people to adopt them. In NYC and the surrounding area, we have a large human population, which in turn means the animals find forever homes at a higher rate up here. :)
