** $100 in pledges to the rescue that pulls **
Kong ACCT-A-163477 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Kong must have confirmed placement with an ADOPTER or RESCUE PARTNER by SATURDAY, MAY 18TH at 10AM. Should Kong's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Brindled boy Kong is a handsome and sprightly young fellow ready to take on the world! Kong was brought to ACCT Philly by a police officer on May 3rd. Sadly, while we were able to locate Kong's owner, they never came back to get him. Poor Kong is still waiting patiently for a new family to come meet him, and recognize him as the absolute catch he is! Kong may not enjoy the company of other pets, but he simply ADORES spending time with his human friends. When it comes to people, Kong has been described as "an absolute gem" and "the most friendly little guy" who has a passion for peanut butter and walks nicely on his leash to boot.
Unfortunately, Kong is not accustomed to the shelter environment, and has shown signs of significant kennel stress including leash biting when he is returned to his kennel. He has also displayed behavioral concerns towards other dogs. With these concerns in mind, it is in Kong's best interest to leave the shelter expediently so he can begin to decompress. Kong must find placement with an adopter or rescue partner by Saturday, May 18th at 10am.
On 5/14, staff attempted a dog meet with Kong and a female husky. Staff made the following observations after this meet: "Kong should not be in a home with any other animals. Kong initially showed positive behavior when meeting Eloise and greeted her with a mid-level wag and semi soft eyes. However when Eloise attempted any play, running around or play bowing, his body language would shift to tense and fixation, and would focus on her movements. When he was close enough to reach her, he then latched onto her tail and would not release for 10 seconds. He did not display any warning signals before biting her tail, and after we got him to release he tried to get back to her again. Completed the rest of the meet at a distance."
Staff noted on 5/5 that Kong was leash biting upon return to his kennel: "Kong has started leash biting when being returned to kennel. He only does it as the leash is being removed, not while walking. Eventually if you stop pulling he stops and lets go, but I placed a sign that says to toss some treats to distract him and get him to let go. Bumped up to [volunteer walker level] blue as well."
Staff noted on 5/4: "Friendly and affectionate, an absolute gem!! Can be pretty snatchy so watch your fingers."
Staff noted on 5/4: "Kennel Presentation: easy to leash. Kong was standing by the door when I got to his kennel. He sniffed curiously through the bars with soft eyes and a wagging tail. When I opened the door he pawed at it to try and get out, but wasn't insistent. I was able to leash him easily and he came right out. Pulls minimally on leash. Handleability/Sociability: loose/allows all handling. As soon as I crouched down, Kong happily trotted over and leaned his whole body against me. He was instantly affectionate and social, and allowed all over pets and love. Kong is the most friendly little guy! I offered him some treats and he took them gently at first but then got pretty snatchy, so open hand or toss treats for him! Kong showed me his very handsome 'sit' as well. I gave Kong some peanut butter and he LOVED it! He allowed all over handling with no issues and was a very happy, social boy. Engages in play. Toys: accepts a trade, likes stuffed toys best. Will trade for a new one or some treats."
Staff noted on 5/4 during Kong's medical exam that he was "high energy, sweet, friendly," and was noted to have some tartar/staining on his teeth and a red rash on his body. Staff later noticed some blood in Kong's stool, so he was examined by a CVT on 5/5, who noted: "Patient BAR, high energy but super friendly. Skin is diffusely erythemateous but no evidence of pyoderma or yeast. Some scabbing on chest likely from scratching. Ears are clean but inflamed, eyes blood shot, paws are red and inflamed in btwn digits and paw pads. Healthy otherwise on brief exam of rest of body systems. Blood in stool was noted on kennel, rectal not performed. Likely has allergies, source not determined; No ectoparasites seen. Bloody stool due to parasites vs dietary vs stress vs other. Start hydroxyzine and recheck in a week to see if any improvement, may need to try cytopoint. Gave Drontal and started fortiflora. If conservative Tx doesn't help or GI issues worsen, may need further Dx." On 5/8 Kong was noted to have a respiratory infection, and was started on a course of antibiotics.
