My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Thanks for your interest in a pet from A.R.F.! If you see a pet here, they are still available for adoption and you should apply through our adoption application on our website at  https://www.arf-il.org/adopt/application/

***Please read Zamp’s biography carefully before applying.***

Zamp is a hospice cat who is looking for a loving home. He has chronic kidney disease (CKD) and needs special care.

Zamp is named after Louis Zamperini because he is incredibly resilient and strong. He showed up in the backyard of an A.R.F. foster. The amount of neglect Zamp had experienced was severe. He was flea-infested, dirty, malnourished, dehydrated, and had been attacked by an animal. Zamp sustained several deep puncture wounds on his side, and was marked with blue ink. It is suspected he was used for dog fighting.

The A.R.F. foster brought Zamp to an emergency vet where he received urgent care. Many amazing people donated towards his medical care. He had internal infections due to the dog bite, including a kidney infection. He weighed only 5 lbs.

Zamp went to follow-up visits to the vet to get additional care to manage his symptoms. Zamp fought hard to survive, and after weeks of love and medication, Zamp’s condition improved dramatically. His wounds healed and he gained weight, (he weighs 10 lbs!). In addition to his physical healing, Zamp’s spirit also rebounded. Sadly, Zamp’s kidney values did not recover and he was diagnosed with CKD.

Zamp is playful, curious, polite, gentle, and friendly. He seeks attention from people and other cats and enjoys the simple things like sitting next to you on the couch to watch tv. He flips over on his back to request belly rubs and head scratches. At night, he sleeps right next to his foster parent on a little bed with a heating pad.

Zamp is energetic and needs daily activity. He absolutely loves to play with mouse toys (including fetch), and wand toys. When Zamp is alone he gets sad and cries. He loves other cats.

Fast movements (people standing up fast, fast hand movements), make him nervous. He would do best in a quiet home without small children. Zamp should never be in a home with dogs, or even the possibility of dogs being around. Even when there’s a TV show with a dog he gets anxious. We think this is related to his previous trauma.

The vet said Zamp’s future adopter would need to manage his CKD. The vet said it is possible one of his kidneys is cystic (which is common with Siamese cats), but even with this condition he could live for many more years. Zamp eats dry kidney friendly cat food, but regular wet food. He has daily medication (1x a day of phosphorus binder, liquid medication that he takes easily). It will be important that he has access to lots of fresh water each day.

Zamp is now looking for his furever indoor home where he will be protected and never have to suffer again. His foster family wants Zamp to go to a home where he can be spoiled and loved, and for someone to continue to fight for him. He sometimes has bad days, but we think he has many more good days to give.

Zamp is microchipped, neutered, and litter box trained.

Zamp’s adoption fee is $45. If you are interested in meeting Zamp, please fill out an online application today. Once your application has been approved, an ARF volunteer will be able to contact you to arrange a meeting.

Due to a high volume of applications, we are often unable to respond to questions or schedule meetings until your application has been approved. More information about our adoption process can be found on our website here: https://www.arf-il.org/adopt/

As an all-volunteer, foster home-based organization, A.R.F. Animal Rescue Foundation does not have a facility where applicants can visit our animals. Please visit https://www.arf-il.org/events/ for a list of our upcoming adoption events.

Thank you for choosing to adopt, not shop!
