Meet Ragnar, our spirited 1 and a half-year-old shepherd mix with a heart as golden as the sunshine we basked in today! ☀️ While Ragnar may not be the perfect fit for households with other animals or young children under 12, he's a shining example of resilience and love, just waiting for the right family to embrace him.
Today, Ragnar showed us his playful side as we spent the afternoon in the yard under the warm, inviting sun. His boundless energy and affectionate nature warmed our hearts as we watched him frolic and explore his surroundings with gusto. Despite his initial hesitations, Ragnar has proven to be a true outdoor enthusiast, reveling in every moment of our outdoor adventure.
While Ragnar may have specific needs, we believe that there's a perfect match out there for him – someone who will appreciate his unique spirit and provide him with the love and understanding he deserves. Could you be the one to give Ragnar the forever home he's been dreaming of?

More about this shelter
We are the Jefferson County Humane Society and , except for our humane officers (who are paid very nominally), we are all volunteers! Our members were instrumental in getting a local levy passed to build a new and larger shelter and the doors opened in 2011. We are currently participating in Iams Home for the Holidays Program and the Purina Pets for People grant program. We are actively pursuing other grants and recently have been asked by the county to partner with them in the operation of the new shelter. Since we are a humane society, our main focus is on getting animals spayed and neutered so there are no more homeless pets. To that end, we bring in a mobile animal surgical clinic who performs spays and neuters at a reduced rate. We are always looking for volunteers to help us in our efforts and, of course, for financial contributions (we are a non-profit, 501 (c)3) and pet adopters! Other items such as food, treats, pet carriers, cages, leashes, collars, food bowls, etc. are also ALWAYS welcomed and appreciated. Please contact us if you have an item to be donated or would like to volunteer with us to try to save some of these homeless, but very loveable, dogs!
