My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Check out their Video! https://youtu.be/aN0BQahbk54?si=_394yVU_NJxLs1YR

Fred and his pal George are two guys who just like to hang out in their quarters, nibbling on hay or sun seed degu food. It's a rough life, but someone has to live it. Of course, they look forward to kicking up their heels in their dust bowl a few times a week, a degu ritual handed down through the ages. These two are not big on being handled. The children in the home didn't know how to handle them gently, so these two adopted a "hands off" policy. Who knows, perhaps a gentle approach could change that. Looking for small but entertaining pets to join your household? This degu duo might be the perfect match for you!

Adoption fee for one degu is $50, if you are taking two or three together the group adoption fee is $85.

Here are some fun facts about degus like myself! We are naturally diabetic and eat mostly hay with a pellet mixture - NO sugar for us!

We also LOVE our dust bath so please make sure we get one about twice a week! We are quite active and enjoy spending out-of-cage time with our favorite humans. Luckily we are diurnal (active during the day) so you don't have to stay up late to hang out with us.

We are social creatures, so if we have roommates here at the shelter, we'd like to stay with them, at least in pairs.

We have our own language of 15 different vocalizations which we use to express our mood. We can live up to 10 years!

Housing requirements: Most housing sold at pet stores is too small for small pets. They are going to be spending most of their lives inside their cage; your housing must be as large as the below or larger (bigger is always better!) in order to adopt this pet.
- up to 3 degus; 3 feet wide by two feet deep by two feet tall

Degu info here online: www.thesprucepets.com/degus-as-pets-1236773

Degus are a social species, meaning the company of their own kind is critical to their health and well being.
If there are two names listed together (eg Peanut Butter w/Jelly), that means that the two animals are a bonded pair of friends, and must be adopted together.
If there are more than two animals listed together (eg Peanut Butter w/Jelly and Toast), the group is to be adopted together. If there are 4 or more listed together, they can be adopted in pairs or trios - we just can't leave a single alone.
Got a single at home you're looking for a friend for? Any animal listed alone on our website is a single and a great candidate; if there is a group of 3 or more, usually one can be taken out of that group as a companion for your single.
Friends must be same sex, unless your current single is already neutered. A new friend will need a separate cage until friendship has been established

If you're ready to adopt within the next 24-48 hours and want to learn more about, meet, or adopt this pet, you can start the process by completing ALL of the following steps:
1. Click on the pink "Adopt me" button to submit an adoption inquiry
2. Watch your email for a response from us!
3. Your email will have a link - use the link to schedule an adoption counseling call with us, where we'll answer your questions and review the pet's information with you!
4. Please email us about your housing for this pet before your phone call. Send a photo of your housing as well as its dimensions to springfield@dakinhumane.org. Please ensure the housing meets the minimum requirements outlined here. Bigger is always better when it comes to small pet housing!
**Adoption inquiries are not holds or reservations. Pets are adopted by the first person we talk with who is a good match for the pet's needs. Multiple inquiries are accepted for each pet.
If the pet you are inquiring about has already been adopted when we call you for your adoption counseling phone call, we'll be happy to take a look at our other adoptables, and see if someone else may be a perfect match for you!**
