My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Athena
Being named for a Greek goddess has not given me any advantages in life nor made me feel brave. I came from a crowded shelter to HSHC in early May, and after recovering from my cold, I got to go to the Smitten Kitten Cat Cafe. It is a lovely, inviting place, but I am naturally shy, so I can usually be found in a cubby or hiding spot. At only 2-years-old, I don't think you can blame me. However, when the interviewer lady (IL) sat beside my cubby and peeked in at me, I gave a little meow as a greeting. She placed her hand just inside the doorway and let me take my time to decide what to do. I sniffed and then poked my head out so she could rub my ears. Eventually, I left my spot to visit with her. I gave her nose kisses and let her pet me all over. Once out of hiding, I stretched my legs and explored the area. When another, bigger cat strode by me, I hightailed it back into my cubby. So, being brave is still a challenge. The IL told me I have a striking, triangular-shaped face, which may mean I have some Asian breeds in my family tree. I'm a friendly, playful girl who needs to improve my confidence. Any ideas on how to accomplish this will be appreciated. 6-11-24

More about this shelter

With an open admission policy, a No-Kill philosophy, and more than 3,100 animals crossing our threshold each year, we have still maintained a 98% placement rate over the last 3 years.

This is an amazing feat for any organization…let alone one that takes in some of the most abused, injured and seriously ill animals imaginable.
