My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

How to Adopt Me:  Contact us at HPHS@Ymail.com and ask for an ADOPTION APPLICATION

Bear is a big love, pure and simple.  At a year or so old, he has a lot to learn about the world and that can make him a little reluctant to step out on a new adventure.  At this point, he would much rather walk than hop in car for instance, but that is just because he has not had a lot of good car experiences.  At heart, he is a gentle soul who approaches new things with careful consideration and optimism.  He has already done well with his leash and house training and is looking forward to long walks  and hikes.  In fact, this medium to low energy, thick-coated guy loves to be outdoors, and could be an outdoor dog in the right home.

Bear was surrendered to the local shelter here in Alturas, CA, with what we assume is his sister, Rosa.  He and Rosa are good buddies and could be adopted together if you need a "built in" playmate for Bear.

If you are interested in meeting this gentleman, please call Jenn at 530-708-2377 or email HPHS@Ymail.com.  Be prepared to tell us a little about your household and why you think Bear might be the dog for you!

Bear has been neutered, micro-chipped and brought up to date on shots.  His adoption fee is just $120.

HPHS supports spay/neutering of all pets. Adopt from us and your new pet is spayed or neutered.  They are up to date with their shots as well.   Discount spay/neuter vouchers are also available at the Second Chance Thrift Store. Income verification is necessary tp receive the voucher.

Additional adoption info

The High Plateau Humane Society is primarily concerned with finding the most appropriate home for our cats and dogs. Please understand that when we ask questions we are not trying to be nosey, we are simply trying to get to know you so we can be sure the animal you are interested in is really the right animal for you, and that you have the tools and resources needed to care for him or her. So, during our interview process we may ask you for references, or conduct a home check to be sure your home environment is appropriate for the animal. We appreciate your patience with us, and your willingness to share information. Thank you for considering one of our foster animals.

Go meet their pets

CATS: Come visit our Second Hand Thrift Store to see our adoptable cats Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM. Call ahead to be sure we are open, as we occasionally need to close due to staffing issues.

DOGS: Call our Dog Program Coordinator, Jenn Andersen at 530-708-2377 if you are interested in meeting one of the adoptable dogs. They are all fostered & so special arrangements must be made to see them.

More about this rescue

The High Plateau Humane Society (HPHS) is an all-volunteer organization that was founded in 1987. We rescue hundreds of dogs and cats each year in Modoc County, California, and (like most rescues) we do not receive any funding from the Humane Society of the United States. Our funding primarily comes from our adoption fees (which pay for about 70% of the medical costs for our average cat or dog), proceeds from our thrift store, and from donations from people like YOU! We are the only organization in Modoc County dedicated to rescuing all adoptable dogs that come through our area shelters. If we don't take them, they are euthanized, and we can't take them if we don't have the funds or foster homes to support them. So, your donations, as well as adoptions, really do save lives! Thank you for your support.
