9/5/07 - We all look forward to the holidays here in the Yorkie Kingdom, and this holiday weekend started off no differently than the rest for all of the sweet little princesses and furry knights here at Carly's Castle. Unfortunately, it didn't take long for the fun and excitement to turn worrisome when little Louie began to have uncontrollable seizures. Louie had gone 2 1/2 years without having a single seizure but a couple of months ago they decided to creep back into his life. After the June incident and having his medication dosage increased, we were pretty sure that he was stabilized and praying that he wouldn't be visited by another one again. Well, just when we started feeling that Louie's life was back in order, more seizures presented this past weekend. Due to it being a holiday weekend, Louie had to be taken to the emergency clinic where he was admitted and monitored closely. Thankfully, when he did present with a seizure, the Dr. was right there to administer the IV medication that would suppress it. Louie was then sent to his regular vet on Tuesday, where she added another seizure suppressant med to the ones that he is already taking.

Poor Louie was born with so many neurological problems, but then to be bombarded with seizures to his already confused little mind is so heartbreaking to all of us. He is a special boy indeed, and we ask that you keep little Louie in your thoughts and prayers.

6/23/07 - DONATIONS ARE DESPERATELY NEEDED AND WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED TO HELP PAY FOR LOUIE'S EXPENSIVE MRI AND SPINAL TAP....THANK YOU!!!!!

Louie has taken a turn for the worst! It has been quite a while since Louie presented with any seizures. Unfortunately, it was as if last night was the night that he was to make up for all the good days that he had in the past. This poor tiny angel began having seizures around 9:30 p.m. last night and they were violently attacking his little brain just about every hour on the hour. Louie was then taken to the emergency hospital where he was evaluated and admitted, so that he could be monitored more closely, as well as have the needed drugs right at hand to help him during this critical time.

Unfortunately, Louie's condition has not improved as these violent seizures have continued to bombard his little brain throughout the day. As heartbroken as we are for this precious little boy, the one positive thing is that when he does have a seizure, the emergency hospital is able to administer Valium, which thankfully causes the seizure to subside immediately. The ER Dr.s are keeping Louie very sedated. They of course want Louie to rest, but the main goal is to try to keep the swelling of the brain down. Louie will remain at the emergency hospital until I pick him up on Monday morning, only to drive him straight to his neurologist, where he will again be evaluated and set up for an MRI and spinal tap.

It saddens me for Louie's sake to know that he won't be coming back to his furry family at Carly's Castle for a while because I know how scared and confused he is in such a strange environment. Louie was not born a "normal" little boy. He is greatly mentally challenged even without having the seizures, so this only adds to more confusion and stress for Louie. All of us here at Carly's Castle and Yorkie Haven Rescue ask that you please keep our sweet Louie in your prayers. It just breaks my heart to know that Louie is going through so much right now, but I know he is in great hands and will pull out of this. I would greatly appreciate it if you could keep Louie in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you so much!

Welcome to Carly's Castle! I would like to introduce to all of you, the Castle's youngest little Furry Knight, Louie....isn't he just so ADORABLE!!!!! Louie was born on August 12, 2004. This precious little boy came to the Yorkie Kingdom as an owner surrender. Louie was surrendered to us because he has seizures and this poor baby apparently has had these seizures ever since he was about two months old. Well, after getting Louie to the Castle, it was noticed that Louie had a lot more going on with him than just seizures, as if his seizures weren't enough for him to have to deal with...poor baby! Louie has visited the neurologist and we now understand that the seizures are secondary to a neurological disorder that he has and it is not due to a liver shunt. The neurologist cannot give us an exact diagnosis to Louie's problem(s) until further testing is done but does feel though, that we are dealing with a fore brain disease and/or multi focal CNS (central nervous system) disease. Louie does have episodes of circling, bumping into things, hyper-responsiveness to environment, "jerky" rapid head and body movements, aggression and anxiety. He will even cry out at times when we know that he hasn't hurt himself. Louie is on the anti-seizure medication, Phenobarbital and has been doing very well on it. When and if the neurologist feels a need to do further testing on Louie, it may include an MRI of the brain and possibly the spinal cord and CSF tap but he doesn't see a need for that right now. Louie is a very special little boy but can be sort of a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. What I mean by that is that Louie can be very loving one minute and his personality might change to him being almost aggressive the next. Louie's world is sometimes very confusing to him and if he is unsure about something, he becomes very frightened and will panic and you really never know how he is going to react. Louie needs special attention and if you are going to leave him during the day for any amount of time, he needs to be in an area where he cannot hurt himself or get into something. He doesn't need to be crated but he also shouldn't have access to the entire home. He needs to also have close supervision when going outside to potty. If you let him out to potty and it's raining, he will just run out in the middle of the yard and spin circles over and over and not know to come back to the door to get out of the rain. Louie just needs a loving guardian at his side to watch over him and make sure that he gets his medication twice daily. So, if you are looking for that precious little lap dog that you can dress up and tote all around town, then Louie is definitely NOT the Yorkie for you. If you are seriously interested in taking on the full responsibility of this "Special Needs" little boy then we invite you to fill out our on-line adoption application. Due to Louie's size and unstable personality he will not be adopted out to any home with children.
