Rusty has been with us for two months now but it seems like yesterday that we brought him home. He's growing by leaps and bounds – he stands 19 inches tall at the withers and weighs about 25 pounds. His coat is growing longer by the day – he's going to be sooooo handsome when he's an adult dog – I won't say "when he grows up" because I don't think he's going to do THAT for a long, long time LOL!!
He's quite the clown with his antics – trying to climb on my lap, pacing the neighbor dog on the other side of the fence in the back yard, grabbing toys one by one and piling them on the bed ... and so much more! One toy is his absolute favorite – a nylon (vinyl? plastic?) donut – and it squeaks ... squeak squeak squeaky squeak squeak ... that toy is going with Rusty to his forever home! LOL! Rusty is able to amuse himself for hours with various toys, but does love getting attention from his humans. He's getting very good – in the house – at bringing toys for us to toss for him. Outside, not so good – too many THINGS!!!
He's very into digging holes in the back yard or chewing on just about anything he finds in reach – like empty flower pots – nevermind that the yard is filled with TOYS!! LOL

Last Friday I strapped Rusty into his harness and then into the back seat and took him off to Door County . On the way I noticed him getting excited when we would pass cars going in the opposite direction. I didn’t think anything of it at the time. By the time we got up there it was dark, so no chance for a walk down the road. It was pretty obvious that he was aware that the other dogs were not with us. He quickly cut loose and was bouncing off the walls. He found the basket with dog toys right away and set off to emptying it. He went crazy with his freedom. There is a small fenced area for the dogs to use so we don’t have to get out leashes every time they need to go out. Unfortunately the fence on the front of the deck has gaps that allowed him to get through. He came when I called him though. He got loose 3 times while we were up there. On Saturday I put up chicken-wire to close that avenue of escape. We walked to the end of the road and back at least twice every day. It’s about 1 mile to the end of the road. Even with more than 4 miles of walks he was still full of energy.
While on those walks I found out that his prey drive is excessive. He wanted, and tried to chase cars, birds, squirrels and anything else that moved. He is much higher in energy that we originally thought. Being the only dog, he was able to let his true nature out. He is playful beyond words. A stereo-typical puppy in the extreme. He will be needing a job and a lot of obedience training. I don’t think anything but a fenced yard will be able to contain him. His exercise needs are very high.
Because of his prey drive, I don’t think he should be in a home with small children. The potential for knockdowns is too great. If he is with another dog, they will need to be very tolerant of him. If they’re not, he will irritate them quickly. He had a wonderful long weekend that allowed our evaluation of him to progress nicely.

We'd like to introduce you all to Rusty, an adorable 5 month old BC mix who joined the MBCR family over the Labor Day weekend. He's been with us for almost a month and has provided a constant source of amusement (and a little irritation - but he's learning LOL!!). He's red (tan) and white, with an adorable black mask, a black spot on his tail, and a white blaze running from the ruff on his neck down his left front leg.
Rusty is learning basic commands - he's got "sit" down pat - and knows "up" (go up on the couch/chair/bed) and "off" (get off the same) - "down" (lie down on your belly) is touch and go - and "come" needs a lot of work yet LOL. "Back up" and "scoot" are also coming along well. He's usually very good about being put into his crate - that's where he eats and sleeps - so long as you give him something he wants to have with him (his food or the "right" toy to tempt him).
He's getting his big boy teeth right now so a Chilly Bone is probably his very favorite toy at the moment. And housebreaking is coming along very well - no accidents in over a week (knock on wood) - and he always goes to the door when he has to go.
Rusty is being fostered in Wisconsin.
