My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi! My name is Joey, and I am ready to steal your heart!

I was found running down the highway and almost got hit by a man named Joe. He was kind enough to stop, put me in his truck, and take me to the local animal shelter. The shelter contacted ESRA, as they knew they could find me a nice foster home until I was ready for a Forever Home. I was really a mess when my foster mom came to pick me up. My pretty fur was all matted, my eyes looked funny, and I was really skinny and lethargic. I got a bath and a grooming right away, and then I went to the vet for a checkup. The nice vet said that I had entroprian (a fancy word that means my bottom eyelids were too big for my eyes). She also noticed that my back legs didn't have full range of motion, so she took x-rays and they showed I have hip dysplasia. Blood tests were done and they came back positive for anaplasmosis (another big word for something ticks give you). They don't call me the hard luck kid for nothin'!

Well, I got scheduled right away for my eye surgery and neutering, and they both went well. I am up to date on vaccinations and am heartworm negative. I also got microchipped. I have started on a thirty-day course of antibiotics for the anaplasmosis, and I have started supplements and exercise to help keep the hip dysplasia symptoms under control. You would never really even know I have it except that I climb up instead of jump up on the sofa and the bed. I also have been eating better, so I am starting to fill out, and boy, do I have energy now!

I am a super snuggly Velcro baby. Everywhere my foster mom goes, I have to be right with her. I love to sit on her lap or snuggle next to her. If she isn't petting me enough, I will touch her with my paw or push my head into her to let her know. I love to play and wrestle and go for walks with my doggie foster brothers. I also love everybody, young and old. If you pet me, you are my friend!

I am pretty well behaved, even though I am still considered a puppy. I know Sit, Lie Down, and Off. I come when I am called and stay in the yard without a leash. I do okay on a leash, although I still pull. However, I have a Gentle Leader collar, and when I wear that I do much better. I am still very curious and like to see what is up on the counters, and I also love to chew. My foster mom had to get me special toys because I shredded the other ones. If I do try to chew something I am not supposed to, all you have to do is tell me No and I will leave it alone. I haven't damaged anything, so I guess I am a quick learner. I also love to ride in the car. I prefer the view from the driver's seat, but I have been told that it isn't really safe for me to be there, so I am trying to stay in the back (most of the time).

I am ready for a Forever Home, so if you have a little bit of patience and lots of love, I could be the one for you. I might steal your heart, but I promise I will take really good care of it and will guard it with my life!

Love,
Joey
