My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sweet little Iris came into rescue with her 8-week-old puppy. Her pup has found a wonderful home, and now it's mom's turn! As is typical when dogs have a litter, Iris lost much of her coat, but now her hair is growing back in and is going to be so soft and beautiful!

AGE: 2 years old
SIZE: A pound or two overweight at 17 lbs. She is an easy keeper and loves to eat!
TEMPERAMENT: Iris adores her person! She loves to be close, to sit on laps or to cuddle up next to her foster mom on the couch and in bed. She will occupy herself with a bone if we are busy. She gets a little worried when visitors come to the house. She does fine if she is allowed to run into the next room and peek around the corner until she is ready to come visit. She will warm up sooner if the person ignores her until she is ready to approach them. If they feed her treats, the process is considerably faster. Because of this she would likely do better in a quieter home without a lot of people coming and going. She seems to warm up more quickly with women but does okay with men she has gotten to know. Iris loves to play! Her favorite game is when I tap my hands on the ground and move them really fast so she can chase them and jump around. When she is finished she rolls on her back for a nice chest and belly rub.
FENCE: Secure physical fence required. Iris appreciates the comfort and security of the fenced yard and occasionally enjoys a nice run around in it.
DOGS: Because Iris has always lived with other dogs, she would like to find a home with a canine companion. She gets along fabulously with other dogs and has great doggy social skills. In her foster home she successfully avoids conflict with a somewhat crabby older resident dog and plays famously with the young boy who can sound really scary when he gets excited. She really looks to the other dogs for cues when faced with something new.
CATS: Iris gets along great with cats. In her foster home, she seems to enjoy it when the two cats can rub up on her.
KIDS: We have not had Iris around any young children, but she seems okay with older, respectful children. A home without kids may be preferable since homes with kids tend to have more visitors and activity.
CRATE TRAINED: Iris likes her crate and stays in it with no problems; sometimes even choosing to be in there on her own. She especially likes to have the option of going into her crate if something is worrying her. At first she stayed in her crate while her foster mom was at work but now she has free run of the house.
HOUSETRAINED: Impeccable manners! Iris will eliminate outdoors when asked to “do her business.” She can be left in the house for 8 hours with no accidents.
OBEDIENCE TRAINING: Iris responds to sit and lie down. She is very smart and food motivated so is very easy to train. Sometimes she gets a little too excited for her treats so we use an open palm instead of fingertips to deliver rewards.
LEASH MANNERS: Iris walks and runs very well on a leash. Initially she was worried out of the yard and would try to walk directly underfoot or very close next to us. Now she is getting very brave and ventures to the end of the leash to take in the smells and sights with the other dogs. She even went on a walk at a state park where her profile pictures were taken.
CAR RIDES: Iris is happy to jump into the car and into her crate. Rarely she will whimper for a few seconds before lying down quietly.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Medium/average. Iris likes to go for walks, run and play. She is also content to lie by your feet while you're on the computer or will lie in the room if you are doing housework.
BARKING: Iris will bark when excited, either out of joy when we get home from work or when she hears something that makes her unsure. She quiets down quickly when asked.
HEALTH ISSUES: No known health issues.
EXPERIENCED HOME: Iris is on the shy side, so someone who is experienced and comfortable with this trait would be best.

Iris is a beautiful little sheltie. She has a delightful personality, wonderful manners and is just a joy to be around. Once she puts her trust in you, she'll be your buddy for life.
