My name is Sage!

For Sage's story, we can't start at the beginning because we don't know what the early years of her life were like. Where we met her was in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. A rescuer let us know that multiple dogs were living on a property, neglected and in rough shape. The property owner didn't seem concerned about their condition- he didn't want help or for the dogs to leave. He wanted the dogs to just remain with him, in horrific conditions, to deteriorate further. One dog stood out, looking worse than the rest. The rescuer pleaded with him and he finally consented to give up just one... Sage.

We were only able to save sweet Sage, this time, but will keep trying.

Sage was transported from the Rio Grande Valley to San Antonio and immediately taken to the vet. She had a fungal infection & yeast infection, which was the best case scenario- not horrific to treat, but an excruciating way for her to be living for so long. She was only 39 pounds. She immediately started antibiotics and medicated baths every other day for 3-4 weeks. The vet said she wouldn’t grow hair for months but her foster started feeding her salmon food, probiotics and red cell and her hair started growing back after about three weeks. Within three months she was a happy healthy dog who now weighs 60 pounds! Her foster put a lot of love into nursing this sweet girl back to health, and it really shows.

Sage is bilingual! She didn’t speak English when she arrived so her foster had to learn Spanish words to speak to her and eventually started adding English as well.

Sage is good with dogs and cats. She walks well on a leash, is potty trained and a quick learner. She's fine in her crate when you’re home but doesn’t like it as much when you aren’t. She has gotten better and will continue to. Once she learns you’re safe, she can adjust to anything.She needs slow introductions to people especially men. 

Sage likes affection and bones and is sweet and calm. Sage is soulful and feeds off emotions so she will console you when needed. She just wants someone to be her person. The IDEAL home could be an individual with dogs or one dog. As mentioned, once she learns you’re safe she can adjust to anything with time,though and she was living with several other dogs in foster. 

Energy level? Medium

Exercise requirements? She doesn’t need too much exercise but would enjoy a regular walk and loves other dogs so would do well at the dog park.

Could live in apartment: Not ideal

Jumps: No

Barks: Very little

Separation Anxiety: A little in the beginning but acclimates, especially if there’s another dog. 

Good in the car: Yes

Chase and fetch: No

Special needs? No thank goodness! Sage is now free to just be the sweet dog she is and loved and cared for the way she deserves.

Sage has made a second journey this year, this time from San Antonio, Texas to a foster home in Colorado where she is available to meet her furever home!
