My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico***

Hi, I’m Lacey!

I’m a proud mama to my sweet pups April and Reese — we’re part of what the humans call the "Easter Litter"! My journey hasn’t been easy, but I’ve always led with love. A kind tourist first noticed me wandering around, very obviously pregnant. When she saw me again, she could tell I’d had my babies, and soon after, we were found near a construction site.

We were lucky — several tourists and kind-hearted construction workers looked out for us, bringing scraps and checking in regularly. Surfers for Strays didn’t have space at the time, but the community really came through for us. I’m actually pretty proud of how I kept my little family going even without a stable home. It’s amazing what a mama’s love can do! ‍‍

Some of my pups found homes locally, and later, April and Reese were adopted too. Now it’s just me, waiting patiently for my own happy ending.

I quickly learned I LOVE when the humans rub my belly, pat my head, and tell me what a good girl I am. In my off time, I enjoy being the resident treat sampler!

The volunteers at the shelter say I am a very good girl. I’m crate and leash trained, which makes walks a joy for both me and my humans. ‍ I know all the basic commands like Sit, Paw, Down, and Wait — and I’m always ready to show off my good manners. I’m calm and well-behaved on a leash. Whether it’s a training session or just everyday life, I’m always eager to please and show that I can be trusted.

When it comes to humans, I’m all about love and cuddles — once I’ve had a chance to sniff you, of course! I like to take a couple of seconds to warm up before I’m ready to give you all my affection. But once I do, I want to be as close to you as possible. I’ll lean in with my head near your face and stare at you in the gentlest way, just asking for some love and attention. I’m a big cuddle bug, and I love curling up with my humans, whether we’re snuggling on the couch, in bed, or just hanging out. I’m sweet, gentle, and always ready to show you how much I care.

When it comes to other dogs, I like to take things slow, same as with humans. I need a bit of time to get to know them, but once I do, I’m quick to make friends. I’m a great dog momma and love looking out for the pups — not only my own! ‍‍ I’ve been told I have a lot of patience and that I’m teaching the little ones good manners, showing them how to be calm and kind to each other and to humans too. While I might be a role model, I’m also always up for a good play session or just chilling with other dogs. I’m a friendly, gentle spirit who gets along with just about everyone — both human and dog!

We’re so well cared for at the shelter, but lately I’ve felt a little pang of longing for a human of my own — someone I can devote all my love and attention to. I’d thrive in a calmer, more predictable home, ideally without young kids running around — I prefer a peaceful space where I can fully relax and build a deep bond with my people. With the help of Surfers for Strays, I’ve budded into a happy and healthy girl and now it’s time for me to bloom even more in a furever home! I can’t wait to hear from you!

Love always,
Your Lacey

More about this rescue

Surfers for Strays was started in January of 2017 by Isabel Velasco and Natalie Ritenour when they rescued 7 puppies and their mother, who had been abandoned at a local hot springs in Lagunillas, Guerrero, Mexico. The puppies were being eaten alive by parasites and their mother was severely malnourished.

Working together the women devised a plan to house and care for the animals and raise funds and more importantly, raise awareness to sterilize pets. They gained enough support in the local community to start helping “callajeros”, street animals in the villages of Troncones, Los Llanos, La Saladita and surrounding regions.

With the help of local veterinarians and citizens, they organized spay and neuter clinics and a program to educate children on how to treat and care for animals. Surfers and other travelers began volunteering and growing the network to foster and adopt animals in the US and Canada. With that momentum and the love and support of key volunteers, Surfers for Strays Inc. was founded in August of 2019 to cover more ground and help more animals escape the cycle of neglect, abuse and abandonment. From 2020-2021, Surfers for Strays adopted out more than 250 dogs and cats to fur-ever homes in North America and paid for more than 3,150 dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered in local communities in Mexico.

Your donations support our programs to sterilize, rehabilitate, find fosters and adopters for animals in need. Your donations also support education programs for the humane treatment of animals in underserved communities. Together we are saving animals and sharing the Mucho Aloha spirit.
