Kirby is a 4-year-old, 65-lb Golden Retriever and a total sweetheart! He is a gentle soul and a total space invader, wanting to get as close as possible to you for love. Sometimes he’ll rest his front paws on your lap and go completely blissed out while you rub his belly, or bring you his toys, showing it proudly to anyone who will admire it.
From the moment he arrived in his foster home, he melted right in—calm, affectionate, and thrilled to be loved. He's fully house-trained, crate-trained, and so easygoing that his foster family has begun leaving him out without any issues at all.
Kirby gets excited meeting new people and dogs, and lights up the second he spots a new friend, tail spinning like a helicopter as he runs to meet them. He currently lives with a 12-year-old and has been gentle and sweet with very young kids as well, walking up softly to give them a kiss. He hasn’t lived with cats so a proper introduction is recommended.
He’s fantastic in the car. He loves activity, including a good rope toy to chew on, but is just as content with an easy day and a quick walk. Kirby would love to have a fenced yard because he enjoys running, but it’s not required as long as he gets some regular exercise.
Kirby is truly one of the most wonderful dogs—gentle, affectionate, goofy, and full of love. He’s ready to bring love and laughter to the lucky family that chooses him.

The adoption fee is $450. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.
Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.
Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.
We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.
We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
