My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

📍 located in Miami-Dade, FL

Juniper 🌿 is a young, spayed mini Rex mix who is fully grown at 5–6 lb. She is litter box trained, extremely friendly and people motivated, and enjoys head rubs. She is looking for a foster or forever home that can embrace a bunny with special needs and provide consistent, attentive care.

Rex breeds are genetically prone to sore hocks aka ulcerative pododermatitis, a condition that causes hair loss, redness, pressure sores, and sometimes open wounds on the bottoms of the feet. Some rabbits require hock socks, bandaging, or medicated ointments.

Currently, Juniper has hair loss on all four paws, redness on her toe pads, and open sores on both hind feet. She was slightly overweight and had overgrown nails at intake, and was previously housed in a plastic-bottom cage (with roam time). This may have contributed to why Juniper has such progressive sore hocks despite her young age.

Overgrown nails cause rabbits to shift their weight onto their heels, increasing pressure on the feet and worsening hair loss and sore hocks. Because her quicks are overlong, her nails are being trimmed every two weeks to safely bring them back to a healthy length. She does very well during nail trims.

We have also begun a gradual weight-loss plan, as reducing weight will decrease pressure on her feet and support healing.

In her foster home Juniper is in an x-pen on soft carpet with blankets. We are monitoring to see if there is any improvement as we work on adjusting her care plan.

Juniper is looking for an experienced foster or forever home. Previous experience with Rex breeds or managing sore hocks is a plus. Juniper is a sweet, young rabbit who deserves a comfortable, safe home where her needs can be met and her condition can continue to improve.

More about this rescue

SOS FL Animal Rescue is a non-profit rescue for rabbits and guinea pigs. We are animal lovers who are experienced rabbit and guinea pig owners. We both fostered small animals with other rescues for years before meeting each other and deciding to start our own rescue so that more rabbits and guinea pigs could be saved. We take in all rabbits and guinea pigs, including unwanted animals, seniors, and medical cases.
