My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Lexi is a super sweet little girl that is just beautiful! Her one flaw? She goes crazy when she hears a vehicle, lawnmower, snowplow or a household appliance! She does respond to treats outdoors and verbal correction indoors. It's funny, because the rest of the time, Lexi is quiet as a mouse. She's adorable and affectionate with people she knows and trusts, and wonderful with other animals! Lexi just LOVES, LOVES, LOVES all the snow - she scoops it up right into her mouth, and has the time of her life playing in it!

AGE: 4 years
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: Currently 24 lbs. Lexi needs to lose about 4 more pounds to get to her ideal weight of 20 pounds. Her adopter will need to measure her food, feed her at scheduled feeding times, limit treats, and provide her with exercise.
TEMPERAMENT: Lexi is shy initially, but she loves to be petted once she knows you. She's very sweet and is not pushy about getting attention.
FENCE: Due to Lexi's strong herding instinct with cars, a fenced yard (wood or chain link) is required for her safety. A single family home away from busy roads would be best, but a fence will still be required.
DOGS: Lexi gets along great with other dogs. She is starting to play with them in the backyard and in the house, and she’d love to find a home with another dog who also likes to play chase games.
CATS: Lexi ignores some cats and likes to chase others.
KIDS: There are no kids in Lexi's foster home but has let visiting (older) kids pet her. She may be overwhelmed in a busy environment with many people or really young children, so an adult home or a home with older children/teens would be best.
HOUSETRAINED: Yes.
CRATE-TRAINED: Lexi is crated 3-4 hours a day while her foster mom goes to work. She is very quiet in the crate.
OBEDIENCE TRAINING: Lexi has not had any formal training yet. She’s very food-motivated and responsive to treats.
LEASH MANNERS: Lexi needs a little encouragement to begin her walk, but once she feels comfortable, she is a great walker. She generally walks behind and sometimes will stop if she gets nervous when someone approaches that she doesn't know.
CAR RIDES: Lexi rides beautifully in a crate in the car.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Medium/average. Lexi likes to play and go for walks.
BARKING: Lexi is very quiet for a Sheltie, but does have reactivity barking. She will bark and turn in circles if she hears cars or trucks on the road. She also barks at noises like the lawnmower and the electric mixer. Out in the fenced yard she will come quickly for a treat, and inside the house she responds to "no".
HEALTH ISSUES: No current known health issues.
EXPERIENCED HOME: Lexi would benefit from a home willing to work with shy dogs with reactviy in a positive manner.

Lexi would do best in a home that will give her lots of love and attention and understand that she will be shy initially, both with her adopter, and whenever new visitors come to the home. She would love a home with a canine pal, but she would also do fine as an only dog with a kind, gentle human who has time to spend with her.

For more information on our adoption process (which includes an application, references and a home visit prior to meeting dogs) or to see other Shelties available for adoption, please visit our website at www.mnsheltierescue.org, or contact us for the adoption application. Lexi's adoption fee is $300.00, and she is spayed, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested and on heartworm preventative (during heartworm season), microchipped, has been bathed and brushed, etc. All of our dogs are indoor dogs and are not to be left outside unattended (not even in a fenced yard, if the adopter is not at home).
