My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi, I'm Gidget! Visitors to Paws know me as for several years I would guard the outside of the perimeter of the shelter. This past winter was very cold, so I decided I was ready to guard the inside of the shelter, where it's warm!! I'm known for my sweet nature and curiosity. I love exploring every nook of my temporary home and making friends. I'm quite brave too; nothing much fazes me! My mom was a bit of a wanderer, but I've learned the joys of a warm, safe space. I enjoy the company of kind humans and am always ready for a new adventure. If you're looking for a friendly and courageous companion, I'm your cat! Let's discover the joys of home together.

Note from Paws Humans: Cleo was a feral cat who would visit our shelter regularly to be fed. We believe that Gidget was in Cleo's last litter before we finally were able to trap and spay her. Gidget was feral initially, but she really warmed up to staff and regular volunteers, and by 2025 she was letting even first-time visitors pet her as well. We tried to bring her into the shelter last year, but she kind of freaked out. However, during the extreme cold spell we had in early 2026 she disappeared for six days. When she came back, we brought her into the isolation room in our clinic, and she was just fine. We left her in quarantine longer than normal so she could adjust to being an indoor cat before we introduced her to a bunch of strange roommates. She is now in the Kool Katz room and is doing great! More about this shelter

The Champaign County Humane Association, Inc. (CCHA) was founded in 1977, initially relying solely on fosters to care for stray animals. In 1991 they opened Paws Animal Shelter in Champaign County, a rural county with a total population of about 39,000. In 2018 the CCHA decided to transition Paws Animal Shelter to a cat-only facility, as there is a desperate need in our area for additional shelter spaces for cats and kittens.

Thanks to a generous donation we were able to expand our shelter in 2021, which has enabled us to rescue even more cats and kittens. While this is obviously a positive development, it has definitely increased our operating costs, as so many cats and kittens that we take in have not been spayed or neutered. In addition, many cats that are surrendered to us have not been in homes with the financial resources to properly care for them, so we frequently have to pay for dentals and other expensive procedures. We are passionate about saving as many cats and kittens as possible, and they have a home with us until we find a forever home for them!
