My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ChiChi is a very happy playful 3 year old merle female great dane/lab or dane/Catahoula mix. She is a great size at just 95 pounds. Chi gets along with almost every dog she’s met, great and small, as well as cats. She loves to zoom around the yard, dodging trees and people and leaping over other dogs in her path! ChiChi will chase a thrown toy or ball and look at it with curiosity, but she doesn't know she is part Retriever, so she waits for you to retrieve it and throw it again. ChiChi knows all of her basic commands and will even sit and wait for her food bowl to be placed in her food stand. She is crate trained and is content to be in her crate when no one is home with her. Besides zooming around the yard, ChiChi's next favorite activity is sitting next to you to be petted, even when you are standing outside. She does tend to give you a big ole paw in case you didn't notice her sitting there waiting! ChiChi would do best in a home with another doggie companion, but may not appreciate a crowd. Her best friend is a English Bulldog mix being fostered as well. If the foster lets her out of the crate first, she runs up to Jayden’s crate, waiting for her to come out and play. ChiChi is an affectionate girl who bonds closely with her special person. She takes a bit to warm up to males but with patience and gentleness, she comes around!
Update 6/17/11 - ChiChi continues to thrive in her foster home, but she is missing her foster friend, Jayden, who was adopted a couple of months ago. Jayden played and ran and rough housed with ChiChi. Now there is no one except occasional doggy visitors with whom to play and run. ChiChi is SO ready for a permanent home with another playful dog. Now that warm, drier weather has arrived, ChiChi enjoys laying outside in the fenced yard on a black stall mat soaking up the warmth and watching nature. ChiChi would do best in a home where she won't be left alone for more than 5 hours at a time each day. That seems to be her limit in the crate. If left uncrated, she might learn the routine from an established dog in a new home, but her curiosity will probably get the best of her. Therefore, she is best crated in your absence until she learns the rules in your home and you are comfortable with how she will behave. She's not a bad girl; just still has puppy type curiosity. Her foster mom took ChiChi to a "Dog Stroll" in the local town. Not only were there lots of dogs walking by, but ChiChi was exposed to a variety of people and children of different ages. Even though she has been shy with some men at first approach, she greeted everyone with a happy face, big tail wagging and gentleness when petted. She didn't even flinch when a motorcycle roared by. She greeted people who were dining outdoors and didn't even try to eat their dinner! It was a great outing for her. Her foster mom also gave ChiChi some experience at the dog park since she was not getting any doggy play at home. At first she just stood there, looking around, as if to say, "WOW! Look at all the dogs!" Then she ventured out into the field with her foster mom's dog and sniffed a few humans and dogs. Pretty soon she became comfortable and started to run and engage in a bit of play. She would check in with either her foster mom or her dog every now and then, but she got along very well with everyone and every dog she met. Another good experience for ChiChi.
