My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jack is a well-mannered Sheltie boy who just loves to be with his people. His one downfall is his voracious appetite, and unfortunately his weight reflects this. He would like to find a home where his adopter will take him for regular walks and spend lots of time with him.

AGE: 7 years
SIZE: ~18 inches tall, and ~50 lbs. Jack needs to lose at least 10-15 pounds. His adopter will need to measure his food, feed him at scheduled times, limit treats, and keep other food items stored off counters - Jack likes to help himself!
TEMPERAMENT: Jack is a good-natured sheltie who shows he’s happy by wagging his tail. He dances and leaps at the door when it’s time to go out. He can be quite shy with new people and situations and he will pace around nervously, but once he’s comfortable, he’s laid back and happy.
FENCE: A secure wood, vinyl or chain link fence is required for Jack’s safety.
DOGS: Jack gets along with the dogs in his foster home as long as no food is present. Jack is very food-focused and has shown food aggression at feeding time towards one of the dogs in his foster home. This can be managed by feeding dogs in crates or separate rooms.
CATS: Jack gets along well with the cat in his foster home.
KIDS: Jack has been friendly with visiting older children.
HOUSETRAINED: Yes.
CRATE-TRAINED: Jack will go in his crate but he would prefer to stay out of it.
CAR RIDES: Jack rides quietly in a crate in the car.
OBEDIENCE TRAINING: Jack has not had formal obedience training, but he is very smart and knows sit, down, shake, roll over and play dead.
LEASH MANNERS: Jack does fairly well walking on leash when he is someplace familiar. He has no problem walking a 1.5 mile distance and as he loses weight should be able to walk farther. When he goes for a walk at a new place, he can be nervous and circles around his walker. He looks frequently to his person for reassurance while walking.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Low. Jack would love to be a couch potato. This may change as he loses some weight.
BARKING: Jack barks when he is happy or excited, and he’ll bark if his foster sisters bark.
HEALTH ISSUES: Jack may have some allergies that can be controlled by diet.

If you’re looking for a Sheltie who wants to be your best buddy, Jack fits the bill. He just loves to hang out wherever you are. He’s happy to cuddle up on the couch with you while you read or watch tv or lie down alongside your bed at night.

For more information on our adoption process (which includes an application, references and a home visit prior to meeting dogs) or to see other Shelties available for adoption, please visit our website at http://www.mnsheltierescue.org, or contact us for the foster or adoption application. Jack's adoption fee is $200.00, and he is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested and on heartworm preventative (during heartworm season), microchipped, has been bathed and brushed, etc. All of our dogs are indoor dogs and are not to be left outside unattended (not even in a fenced yard, if the adopter is not at home).
