My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello! I am a chocolate-colored, 30 lb, 6 year young Portuguese Water Dog mix. My name is Wonka. You can probably guess this name has something to do with a chocolate factory but I am told I am also as sweet and special as a chocolate truffle too!
I am affectionate and good-tempered. I would be best suited to a family of adults or one with gentle teenagers. I have not lived with children. I have to admit that their loud voices and quick movements frighten me a little. I am fine with other dogs who are quiet and respectful of my space. I have met just a couple of cats who, after sniffing me politely, ignored me. We got along fine that way!

I walk well on a leash but I must tell you that I need a seeing-eye person to make sure that I don’t bump into things in unfamiliar places. I am completely blind. Once I have been on a certain route during a walk outside I feel confident and sometimes walk out ahead! Until that I need someone to make sure I don’t knock my head on obstacles as I walk beside them. Being blind does not prevent me from being able to navigate around a house easily and I am even fine with stairs once I have learned what the layout is. This takes me only a day or two. However, it is definitely most kind if my humans do not move the furniture after I get used to a place.vI am house trained and I know how to use a doggie-door. I am very well-behaved and seldom bark. I travel well in the car - I just settle down for a siesta on long trips. I am also fine in a crate as long as it isn’t for too long. I sleep soundly through the night and I appreciate a soft doggie bed. I really like jumping on the sofa and taking a nap or having a cuddle there too. I am very philosophical and make the best of all situations. When I stayed with a MaxFund Volunteer she took me (and a crate) to a day-long workshop she was participating in. I was very good just hanging out in my crate in the workshop room, being friendly to everyone, taking polite bathroom and snack breaks, and not making any distracting barks or whines. I was told I was the “perfect pooch!”vOh yes, and I am very partial to tummy rubs. I may look like a big teddy bear when I lie on my back but I assure you I am all dog and the mix in “Portuguese Water Dog mix” has absolutely nothing to do with bears – or teddies!

I would be best suited to a calm and affectionate family who wants a loving and mellow companion. I love being with my humans and I am very easy to live with. I am in a foster home at present so if you would like to meet me, please contact the MaxFund office.
