My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

My name is Tessa, and I am new to the world of ESRA, but I am so much happier now that I am learning to be a part of a family. A few weeks ago a wonderful ESRA volunteer picked me up after finding me listed for sale on Craigslist. My past revolved around having puppies and being in a kennel most of the time. I was so nervous and scared when I first came to my foster home that I stayed in my crate as much as possible, but after the first week I started calming down and spending more time on a pillow near my foster mom.

I have been to the vet and have received all my shots. My teeth and ears have been cleaned. I am heartworm negative, spayed, and have started my first month of heartworm and flea preventatives.

I get along fine with the resident Springer and the cats, but I am very shy and cautious with men and with the human friends who come to visit. I do not counter surf, I can be left in the house without ever getting into any trouble, and I am totally housetrained. I am a little nervous around smaller dogs and young children. Teenagers are fine once I get to know them, so I would probably do best with kids over the age of twelve.

I am working on walking on a leash. Once I learn where I am going, I am willing to go. My Springer foster sister has been a great help in teaching me that a walk is fun. We have been in a car many times, and I stay in the back seat with no problems. I am very frightened of noises and unexpected movements, and I tend to want to stay in or near a kennel when I am not with my family. I do not bark unless I am startled by someone.

I started out sleeping in a crate in my foster parents' bedroom, but recently they and my foster sister have allowed me to join them in bed. It's nice to snuggle with them there! I am really affectionate and enjoy soaking up all my foster family's love.

My foster mom feels that I will have a lot to offer once I learn the joys of being a dog. I am already enjoying being in a foster home, and now I long for a Forever Home of my own. I want someone there who will spend time with me and not leave me locked up by myself. How sweet it is to be learning that there is a better life than in a kennel!

Looking forward to meeting you,
Tessa
(former puppy mill mama)

From her foster mom: Tessa is slowly coming out of her shell, and she has a great disposition. She greets you with a toothy smile and/or a yawning yowl as well as a wiggly Springer butt. We have had no problems with Tessa inside, and she is learning the outdoor boundaries with just the use of positive reinforcement. She responds to lots of love and praise. I feel that a family with older children and other pets would be great for her. She has lots to learn about how much fun it is to play and run around, and an older dog may help with this.

If you are that special person who can love Tessa, exercise her, and hang out with her, send us an email.

Please note that an approved adoption application is the first step in a more thorough interview process that is designed to match each dog to exactly the right family, and that the final decision rests with the dog's case manager.

Please read the Adoption FAQ and get an Adoption Application approved before inquiring about Tessa.
