My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Mimi came into the rescue on 1/11/2011. The vet estimated Mimi’s age to be approximately 1 year old, and she weighs 14 pounds. We think she is a Chihuahua, Min Pin, Basenji mix, but we really don’t know.

We know nothing about this girl, as far as her history. All I can tell you is that she was given to a schoolteacher who thought she wanted a Chihuahua. This woman had adopted a dog from us previously, only to return her within a few days. Now she called with another dog, who she had taken from a family member that didn’t want to keep her, and then decided she did not want her either. We were happy to take her, since she was working 12 hours a day, and kept Mimi crated the whole time.

Since January, Mimi has been adopted and returned to the rescue twice! What was the problem?????? Mimi is deaf, and no one was taking the time to learn how to talk to her. To remedy this, her foster mom started working with a trainer at the Zehfuss K9 Training center, and completed a beginning obedience class with her. Now Mimi has blossomed! She is learning all kinds of new words all the time, and has learned to watch for signs/signals. Besides basic obedience signals, she is also learning things like, “Where is your ball?”, “Do you want to go?”, “Are you ready to eat?”, etc.

Since Mimi is deaf, she needs a home that has a secure back yard, and will have to be on lead anytime she isn't at home, but that really isn't so different than most other dogs. She loves dogs, cats, and kids, but our only worry about adopting her out to a family with kids, is someone leaving the front door open too long.

This girl is very smart, and loves to learn. She likes to earn treats, and is very playful too. She also loves to cuddle up with you, and will go anywhere with you. She is very confident, and loving too; she just has a wonderful temperament. She is a wonderful dog!

This website has great info and training tips about deaf dogs.
