My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Notes: Mulligan, chow/collie mix, 55 pounds, 1.5 years

Mulligan is a friendly, confident dog who is immensely charming and very handsome. Although he was found as a stray, he has the beautiful carriage and benign self-importance of a show dog. His large head and friendly smile give him an almost comically happy appearance, and he is clearly aware that he is very charming indeed.

Mulligan is the sort of dog who made many friends on his travels and who was probably a regular visitor to homes where he had once received a tasty meal or was given shelter. As a result, his evaluation of humans seems almost to assess personal merit, not just likelihood to provide treats or casual affection.

Certainly this was the case when he was first seen, which was at the Hedgesville Heritage Day celebration about a week or so ago. Mulligan befriended a pack of Cub Scouts and happily stayed with them throughout the day. At the end of the day, Mulligan disappeared, so he did not join Hedgesville Hounds that day.

About a week later, during a golf tournament thrown to raise funds for HH, we got a call from the local bank telling us that Mulligan had been seen again. Our director left the golf tournament and took Mulligan to our vet's office, where he remains while we find him a foster. He is currently being treated for Lyme disease (very common in this area) and for minimal to moderate heartworm infection (seen in strays). The prognosis for Mulligan is excellent, and we expect no permanent impact on his health.

Mulligan strikes us as a colorful character who sees himself as somewhere between dog and human. Certainly he views himself as more of a friend than a playmate -- even when joining the Cub Scout pack, he did not romp with his little friends, he simply settled nearby, enjoying their company. We suspect he would be an excellent, somewhat independent companion who would bond profoundly with his adopter(s).
