Meet Scarlett and Rhett!

We recently received a call from a rescuer who saves dogs from Puppy Mills, or places that breed high volumes of dogs in poor conditions for profit. Dogs that come from puppy millls are usually adults that are at the end of their breeding days, and are no longer of use to the mill owners, as they can no longer produce profit. These animals are routinely euthanized, but in some cases, they are surrendered to rescue groups and shelters.

Puppy mill adoptions are special adoptions. Very often the dogs are purebreds and they look like any other dog on the outside. However, they have spent their entire lives in a cage. Many of these dogs have never even had their paws touch grass, even though they are anywhere from five to seven years old. They are removed from their cages only for breeding. Their physical health is often poor, due to lack of veterinary care and poor nutrition. They are not socialized with humans or other dogs, and tend to be very shy and require lots of patience. They also are not housebroken, and can be more difficult to housebreak since crating is often stressful for them (since they have spent their whole lives in a cage!)

The good news is that Rawhide has facilitated dozens of adoptions of these special dogs, with fantastic results. These dogs blossom with proper food and medical care, but more importantly, with families who care for them, love them, and make them feel safe and comfortable. There is nothing better than watching a puppy mill reject conquer their fears (like learning how to climb stairs), or learning how to play and roll around with abandon. They have remarkable resilience and can make wonderful, and incredibly loyal, lifelong pets.

Scarlett and Rhett were named as soon as they came in and now there names are beginning to fit their personalities.

Scarlett is very mischevious and quite hilarious at times. She has been often found on a bed that she pulled from a different room, with toys, and blankets surrounding her (she pulled those items to her "place" as well). She watches TV, and still falls over watching birds fly by. I truly believe she is enjoying her new found freedom. Scarlett keeps her crate clean and is getting better and better everyday with her housebreaking. She is still very frightened of people but she now comes up to me to sniff my hands and feet. She is also a "Sock Stealer".

Rhett , on the other hand is very reserved. Although he has his crazy moments where he runs around and slides all over the wood floors, he is very content to lay in his crate and watch TV. He too is very frightened of people, but my hand has received a lick or two and his tail does wag when he sees me.

We would love to see these two darlings stay together as they are very attached. If you are looking for the extremely rewarding challenge of rehabilitating a puppy mill dog , consider Scarlett and Rhett - I think you will be very happy you did. Check the events page on our website for more information and directions to our adoption events.
