My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

From Cassie's foster mom: The people who found Cassie along a rural Iowa highway as well as the shelter operator she was relinquished to all describe Cassie as being very sweet. We heartily concur! This very pretty three-year-old girl really is a sweetheart.

Cassie came to us with some insecurities, but she has gained confidence very quickly, and she now greets us with a wagging tail and a happy look. She wants to be physically close to us, but she's not underfoot.

We haven't tried using a dog crate. We have felt comfortable giving Cassie the run of the house from the beginning. She spent the first night sleeping in our bedroom, and since then she has somehow managed to spend at least part of each night sleeping on our bed. She also likes snuggling on the sofa.

We were concerned with Cassie's eating habits. She showed little interest in food, and we had to hand feed her. Now she eats full servings of her dog food, though at a very leisurely pace. She sometimes has to be reminded to start eating.

We have a male Springer and two cats. Cassie and our dog get along very well. She should also get along with dog-savvy cats who don't mind being sniffed and greeted by a forty-six-pound dog.

Our yard is not fenced, so Cassie has only been outside on a leash. At first, it seemed that the purpose of a walk was to get as tangled up as possible in the leash. Cassie has improved very quickly. She still needs to learn to heel, but she rarely pulls on her leash. She's calm when she meets other dogs out on walks. She perks up when she sees squirrels and rabbits, and she would likely give chase if she could. Cassie likes being greeted by people on her walks, although she's uncomfortable in a crowd. She's becoming more comfortable meeting very young children.

Cassie seems to be reasonably well housetrained. She has had a handful of accidents in the house, but we think that they were primarily the result of submissive urinating.

Cassie knows the command Sit. She responds to her new name. She's not too interested in toys, but she knows how to fetch.

Cassie has had her rabies shot and all her vaccinations. She has an ear infection which she's being treated for. She tested positive for Lyme disease and is currently taking the antibiotic doxycycline. Fortunately, she's not showing any symptoms of the disease. Cassie will return to the veterinarian soon for a follow-up blood test and her booster shots. She also needs to be spayed.

Cassie needs a home where someone can be with her at first to be a reassuring presence, since a change of environment may be stressful for her. After knowing Cassie for just a few days, we feel that she will be a wonderful, loving companion.

Please note that an approved adoption application is the first step in a more thorough interview process that is designed to match each dog to exactly the right family, and that the final decision rests with the dog's case manager.

Please read the Adoption FAQ and get an Adoption Application approved before inquiring about Cassie.
