DAKOTA NEEDS A FOSTER HOME!

Dakota is a White German Shepherd, and is very frightened in her new environment. She will need alot of love, patience, TLC, treats and rawhides to get her past her tragic past (Dakota made us put in the treats and rawhides part, but it would be nice!)

Dakota is warming up beautifully and loves for a volunteer to come and sit with her and maybe share some treats. (She likes McDonalds french friesm but we want to encourage her to embrace a healthier diet). She has been out running in the large fenced-in area with her new friend, Zeus, and she follows her human friends like a shadow. What a difference a couple of weeks make! She is happy and safe and looks so wonderful as she trots along.

Due to her timid nature and history, we prefer a home without young children. Another gentle canine friend and a fenced-in yard would be a definite plus.

Read on to learn more about our puppymill rescue effort:

Early in 2006 received a call from a rescuer who saves dogs from Puppy Mills, or places that breed high volumes of dogs in poor conditions for profit. Dogs that come from puppy millls are usually (but not always) adults that are at the end of their breeding days, and are no longer of use to the mill owners, as they can no longer produce profit. These animals are routinely euthanized, but in some cases, they are surrendered to rescue groups and shelters.

Puppy mill adoptions are special adoptions. Very often the dogs are purebreds and they look like any other dog on the outside. However, they have spent their entire lives in a cage. Many of these dogs have never even had their paws touch grass, even though they are anywhere from five to seven years old. They are removed from their cages only for breeding. Their physical condition is often poor, due to lack of veterinary care and poor nutrition. They are not socialized with humans or other dogs, and tend to be very shy and require lots of patience. They also are not housebroken, and can be more difficult to housebreak since they have spent their whole lives in a cage being forced to eat, sleep, whelp, defacate and urinate in the same small space.

The good news is that Rawhide has facilitated dozens of adoptions of these special dogs, with fantastic results. These dogs blossom with proper food and medical care, but more importantly, with families who care for them, love them, and make them feel safe and comfortable. There is nothing better than watching a puppy mill reject conquer their fears (like learning how to climb stairs), or learning how to play and roll around with abandon. They have remarkable resilience and can make wonderful, and incredibly loyal, lifelong pets. Do you think you are up to the challenge, and the reward, of adopting one of these special dogs? If so, please fill out an application.
