My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Description: You would think that being the only boy in a colony of girls would be a great thing, but Matt is here to tell you that it isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Matt is the only male in the group of collies that was surrendered to MWCR by a breeder who was getting out of the business. He is a big (70 pounds), handsome guy who turns all the ladies’ heads, but he definitely prefers being a member of a family to being the top dog in a collie harem.

Matt spent most of his life living outdoors and is now adjusting to the indoor lifestyle. He is making progress with his housetraining, but will probably need supervision for awhile after his neutering on 7/26/11. He is polite and hasn’t attempted any counter surfing, but because he is a big boy, he sometimes underestimates his own size and has been known to clear off a coffee table with a happy wag of his tail and a cheerful wiggle of his rear end. He knows his name and the commands “here,” “kennel,” “wait,” “off” and “rude.” He is tolerant of all forms of grooming, is crate trained and has been de-barked. Matt learns very quickly and seems to be more motivated by praise than by treats. He loves to be told that he is a “good boy” and is willing to do almost anything to hear it.

Matt gets along well with lady dogs, either submissive or dominant, and though there is a bit of tension with male dogs, this should improve after his neutering. He should not be in a home that includes cats because he chases them aggressively and would probably hurt one. Matt is an affectionate boy who loves people, but because of his size, he should probably not live in a home with young children (under age 8). He would never intentionally hurt a child, but he doesn’t fully appreciate his size and could easily knock down a toddler by just turning around.

Matt is a friendly, active guy who will need a home with a fenced yard where he can run and play. He would not get enough exercise by simply taking a walk with his people, though he walks beautifully on a leash and enjoys going for walks. He has reliable recall as long as there is nothing around to distract him.

Matt is a very loving boy who would be happy to stand for hours with his head in your lap, soaking up the love. He just melts when he hears the magic words “good boy,” and could be an obedience training star with just a little work. He would fit beautifully into almost any home that didn’t include toddlers who could be bowled over by Matt’s enthusiasm. He would enjoy a doggie companion, but would also be fine without one, since he has definitely learned that it’s better to be with people than with his collie harem.
