My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

HoneyBear is a five year old Chihuahua girl that had been terribly neglected and abused. She is not adoptable, but YOUR DONATION can help pay for the final of her FOUR leg surgeries. (See photo commentary and how to make a contribution below.)

HoneyBear was a backyard breeder kept in a crate producing puppies in order to make money for her “human”. One day she was unceremoniously dumped at the shelter with instructions, “Euthanize her because she is no longer any use to me”. Luckily Open Arms Dog Rescue was there at that very moment and saved her. But poor HoneyBear came to us with injuries to ALL four legs…each left to heal horribly without medical attention. She was in pain and unable to walk.

Her front legs were broken at the ankles and each rear leg had ligament ruptures and rotated patellas almost 90 degrees off center. We will never know how HoneyBear was injured. But we do know that despite all, she is the sweetest most endearing little girl we have ever seen, not to mention oh-so-cute.

The bones in HoneyBear’s front legs were so badly broken that two metal plates were surgically implanted to allow for weight-bearing mobility. Next, she had surgery to realign the patella and repair ligaments in her right rear leg. Final surgery to do the same for her left rear leg was recently completed. Drs. Mackenzie and Aragon at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists have done remarkable surgeries on our HoneyBear. They have given HoneyBear a generous discount because she is a rescue dog. But we still need to raise approximately $850 and this is how you can help.

HoneyBear has a very unique way of walking…but she is now walking! Please consider a donation and be part of the miracle that has enabled HoneyBear to stroll over to her food and water dishes, saunter to greet us at the door and initiate paw-play with her foster siblings. Your donation in any amount (even $5) will mean a better quality of life for a very deserving dog. HoneyBear thanks all of her admirers personally with a picture note card and enjoys receiving messages at her own email address.

Here are three ways to make a donation for HoneyBear:

   Send your check to: HoneyBear, C/O Arms Opens Network, P.O. Box 354471, Palm Coast, FL 32135. Write HoneyBear on your check or enclose a note stating that your donation is for her.

Via PayPal: Access your account and select Send Money tab; input paws2heart@bellsouth.net (HoneyBear’s personal account) and amount of donation; select Personal tab; and finally Gift tab.

Send your check to the bank where an account is established in her name: Intracoastal Bank, 1290 NW Palm Coast Parkway, Palm Coast, FL 32137. On the envelope, write: Attention Susan for HoneyBear in Open Arms   

Thank you for caring about HoneyBear, our special little Chihuahua girl.

Photo #2: HoneyBear is taking it easy in her play pen after surgery. Look closely at her shaved leg and you can see the sutures by her kneecap.
Photo #3: Before surgery, HoneyBear’s kneecap does not even show on the x-ray. It is rotated 90 degrees off center to the outside of her leg. Tibia deterioration is also evident from injury.
Photo #4: HoneyBear and Dr. Aragon smile for the camera a day after her surgery.
