My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

From Izzy's foster mom: This beautiful girl is Izzy. She has had a hard time so far in her short life. She was raised by an unscrupulous breeder who kept her caged constantly. The result was a very traumatized girl. Izzy has had at least one litter of pups, but she is spayed now.We have had Izzy since September 24, and it's only now that I feel we can list her for adoption.

When she first arrived, Izzy ran off twice. She was completely terrified of everything. For three days she didn't move except when we lifted her outdoors. Izzy didn't drink for two full days, and I began syringing small amounts of Pedialyte into her mouth almost constantly. It was on day six that she finally took a drink from a bowl. After eight days she finally ate something, and it was at about that time that she got up and walked in the house. For the next two weeks she shook constantly, so much that we bought her a thunder jacket to help her feel more secure. It really did help. I have nine dogs, and eventually she went outdoors with them. Izzy loves the outdoors, and it's really the only place she appears relaxed. When she's outside, her tail is up and she runs all over.

At night she sleeps in a crate. For a while we kept her crate in the living room, so she would lie there with the door open. Izzy now has a bed in the living room, and she rarely moves from it. Now she eats with the rest of the dogs and drinks without any problems.

Izzy's recovery is not by any means complete. At the moment, we only get short glimpses of her personality. Occasionally she will take a leaf, an emery board, or a piece of packing material to her bed and lie on it! Otherwise she is very muted, flat, and overly calm.

Four weeks ago we had a change in circumstances, and Izzy's skills were needed. We saved a very sick six-week-old Great Dane pup. He was terrified and cried every time he was alone. We decided to put him in with Izzy at night, and the result was silence! Izzy looked after him, and she has done so every day since then. Now she is getting a bit fed up with him; he's a big boy! But during this time we have seen Izzy blossom. It seems that she is a bit more confident doing something she knows, which is raising pups.

We have discovered some of the things Izzy likes. She definitely favors males. She loves peanut butter. She very much enjoys long walks. But true to her Springer nature, she is most happy when she is lying on your lap.

Izzy is housetrained and up to date with her shots. I don't know how this wee girl will end up, but I am sure that we have taken her as far as we can. It's now time for her to go to her Forever Home. If you are looking for an eager-to-please Springer, Izzy is not for you. However, I think that attitude will develop in time.

Izzy has shown absolutely no aggression. She is not necessarily a submissive girl, but right now she has no confidence at all. What she needs is a special Forever Family who will love her and commit to helping her feel happy, nurtured, and secure. Then Izzy will be able to thrive and develop into the dog she was meant to be.

Please note that an approved adoption application is the first step in a more thorough interview process that is designed to match each dog to exactly the right family, and that the final decision rests with the dog's case manager.

Please read the Adoption FAQ and get an Adoption Application approved before inquiring about Izzy.
