My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

*Splash urgently needs a new foster (or forever) home! Please contact us if you can help!**

Splash is an 85 pound X breed possibly lab/rottie dog who has made herself completely comfortable in her foster home. Splash is 5 years old. She is housetrained and can be left loose when you go out. She is energetic, sometimes goofy, and very playful. She loves to chew her toys, stuffed animals don`t stand a chance. Given a durable squeaky ball, she will play and play for hours (especially on her own). She is a very smart girl. When asked to get her ball, she will always bring one back. It isn`t always the one you had in mind, but she will find anything from a tennis ball to a basket ball but she will bring a ball regardless. She plays best when you have 2 balls so as she brings back one you can throw the other.

Splash is a very muscular, strong dog. She has the body type of a Rottweiler. Splash is quite content to lie on the floor (although she prefers the couch or bed). She does not like to be put in a crate, but since she has been with us, she has been left loose and has not gotten in to anything. She likes to sleep at the foot of the bed of her foster kid brother.

Splash does like her food. She is very food motivated and will do (mostly) anything for a treat. She sometimes needs to be told to be nice before taking the treat, as she can get a little over eager. She is very good to sit and stay while waiting for her meals and is understanding `leave it` until told that it`s okay. She will keep your kitchen floor quite clean, as she will jump for anything from a piece of cheese to a potato (she can catch in the air with ease). This is all typical lab behaviour and with any lab, any dog for that matter you can't trust her to leave food on the counter or access to food out.

Splash loves to go for walks, and knows when the leash comes out, it`s time. She does pull on a walk, (we are working on that) but she sits nicely at every corner, and will wait patiently (when told to stay) until the light turns green. She is okay in a car, but should have a barrier between the front and back seat, as she tends to pace and will try to get to the front seat. She is quiet though, does not bark or cry in the car, and just does not seem to settle well. We have not taken her on long drives, so I`m not sure if that would change with distance.

Update from Splash's foster home, Feb 2013: Splash is a very intelligent dog, she loves to have a ball in her mouth.
Splash would do better being the only dog in the house, this would calm her down when going out and people coming to the house.
An adult family or teenage kids are advisable due to her size.
She does like to sleep on the bed, when she's invited. She likes the dog couch most of the time.
Splash has had good interaction with small dogs with no issues (we dog sat a friend's 2 dogs one of which was a small dog and had no issues)
Splash is a dog that benefits from good exercise daily during the winter (sometimes x2) but for sure x2 during the summer. Splash goes to the dog park, (I am unable to walk 3 dogs) We do play in the yard, with either a ball or Frisbee.

Splash's ideal home would be an adult home with a large fenced yard to play ball in daily and someone who would love to work with her on training and go for long walks daily. She needs a leader and is eager to learn. She would not make a great first dog but anyone who has done some training or had large breed dogs before would do well with her.

Splash is available for adoption through Grand River All Breed rescue. Her adoption fee is $375. All of our dogs are spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and heartworm tested as part of their adoption.
