My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Patty is a very sweet and gentle Sheltie girl who came into rescue due to changes in her family. Although she's shy initially, in the right environment, she will quickly be waiting to greet you when you arrive home, happily wagging her tail at your return!

AGE: 2 years
SIZE: 22 lbs which is ideal for her. She is about 15" at the shoulder.
TEMPERAMENT: Once she bonds, Patty loves to sit with you and be petted. Loud unexpected noise or movement can scare her, so a calm environment would be best. She is good about baths and being brushed, but prefers to "air dry" since the blower scares her. Patty likes it when you use a "happy voice" with her, and her home should be focused on using positive guidance with her.
FENCE: A secure wood, chain link or vinyl fence with no gaps, with direct access from the house, and with secure gates is required. Patty panics when frightened and will try to pull out of her collar/harness.
DOGS: Patty has enjoyed running and playing with other Shelties while in foster care and they have brought out her playfulness. She would do best in a home with a social canine companion to help her become more confident. Patty prefers to eat in her own space. We suspect she may have had to compete for food at some point in her life (e.g. breeding kennel environment).
CATS: Unknown - no cat in her foster home.
KIDS: Unknown - no children in her foster home, but she reportedly did well with the children in her previous home. She will need a family that understands and is sensitive to the needs of a shyer dog.
CRATE-TRAINED: Patty prefers to find her own safe spots in the house, and can be trusted to have free run of the house when her foster mom is gone.
HOUSETRAINED: Yes.
OBEDIENCE TRAINING: Patty has had no formal or informal training. Initially, her adopter's priority should be to build trust. Once she feels safe and trusts her person, she will benefit from positive training methods to help her build confidence.
LEASH MANNERS: Patty will pull out of a collar when frightened. She should not go for walks with her new family for several weeks, until she feels safe in her home and trusts her person. After that, a snug, secure harness should be used when walking Patty, as she will pull out of a collar.
CAR RIDES: Patty rides quietly in her crate in the car.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Low initially. At first Patty will want to spend time in her safe spots, and she should have free access to do so. She should not be forced to interact or be blocked from her safe spots. She is now seeking attention and affection from her foster mom, and likes to play with the other Shelties, chasing the rabbits and squirrels with them in her fenced yard.
BARKING: Fairly low indoors for a Sheltie, but she may become more vocal as she becomes more comfortable in her environment. Patty barks while playing with her foster brother outside, and when she is ready to come back inside.
HEALTH ISSUES: No known health issues.
EXPERIENCED HOME: Patty should go to a family that is experienced working with a shy and fearful dog, and who understands the need to allow a dog like Patty to progress and adjust at her own pace.

Patty is adorable and cuddly, and will thrive with a patient family who understands shy dogs, and with a social canine companion to bring out her playful side. Please check back for more photos soon!

For more information on our adoption process (which includes an application, references and a home visit prior to meeting dogs) or to see other Shelties available for adoption, please visit our website at www.mnsheltierescue.org, or contact us for the adoption application. Patty's adoption fee is $350.00, and she is spayed, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested and on heartworm preventative (during heartworm season), is microchipped, has been bathed and brushed, etc. All of our dogs are indoor dogs and are not to be left outside unattended (not even in a fenced yard, if the adopter is not at home).

***The Sheltie's bio explains the type of home that will best meet that Sheltie's needs, and indicates if a fence is required, and whether the Sheltie can be placed with children, dogs or cats. Please note that we cannot guarantee the availability of the Shelties in our program, and that our priority is to meet the needs of the Shelties in our care.***
