Without a doubt, these pups are survivors, and it’s all thanks to their amazing mother, Fran.
Not that long ago, the Mahoning County Dog Pound received a call from a man who said he had found a mother dog and six puppies by the side of the road. When the deputy arrived to pick them up, he knew immediately that the pound wasn’t the right place for this little family.
Fran, their mother, was nothing but skin and bones. You could literally count every rib. Her face had sunken in from starvation, and the collar which probably fit her perfectly at one time hung like a tattered necklace around her neck.
The puppies however were in fantastic shape. If not for their obvious relationship to Fran, no one would have been able to put the two together. They had nice round bellies and full faces as they raced around Fran’s legs, jumping and playing. Their mother had given ever last bit of nutrition she had to her babies so they would survive, even at her own expense.
The deputy brought them straight here to New Lease on Life, and thankfully, one of our wonderful foster parents took them in within hours of their arrival. The turnaround was amazing to say the least. With proper nutrition and love, Fran immediately began to thrive. Her milk re-dropped, and she began nursing the puppies again, much to their delight. And with the extra energy, she rediscovered her zest for life. She began to play like a puppy, both with her new human family and the other dogs in the house. She even plays with the cats.
The pups are adoring all of the attention they are getting from their foster family. All day long, they romp and play with their foster mom’s other dogs, cats and kids. The neighborhood kids know exactly where to go when the school bus drops them off.. to the Puppy House! They’re getting plenty of attention.
We believe the pups are American Bulldog/Lab mixes. We’re expecting them to reach 50 to 60 pounds as adults, so potential adopters should plan on a dog on the high side of medium when they’re all grown up.
The pups are not yet potty trained, but they are paper trained, and we’re expecting them to pick up housebreaking without a problem. We’d be happy to give you tips on how to crate trained and get them off to a great start.
Interested in adopting? The pups are currently in foster care, but they would love to meet you. Just call 330–397–8270 to schedule an appt to meet them at the shelter. Once you meet them, you can fill out an adoption application. If approved, you must leave a 50% deposit ($100) to reserve your favorite puppy. They are not yet spayed, but this will be done BEFORE you take them home. In fact, they already have an appt scheduled Tuesday, November 15, to be spayed, which means they can go home with you as early as Wednesday, November 16, if you reserve your favorite this weekend.
