My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet our latest heartbreaker, Ada. What a story this beautiful 3 year old has to tell! Considered feral, Ada was running loose in the mountains of western Idaho. A kind gentleman would leave food for her in a nearby field , but he passed away. Neighbors then stepped up to become her caretakers. Ada had 2 different litters of puppies out in the hills before these folks decided to trap her and try to give her a different life. Once spayed and cleaned up and after finding homes for her puppies, they called WBCR for help with Ada. This regal classic rough coated lass came to us earlier in the year, and despite her rough start, is doing her best to learn that life is going to be OK!

Since most of her life she did not have much human contact, Ada is learning how to trust people and is adjusting to the life as a pet. Although she currently prefers to avoid humans, she is slowly becoming more at ease with them and has just starting taking treats from people when she feels comfortable. She is improving every day. Like many shy dogs, Ada is very comfortable around other dogs, gets along well with them, and is even starting to play and wrestle with her canine foster siblings. She would probably really benefit from a confident male dog (or 2) in her adoptive family to look to for guidance.  She’s not showing much herding instinct, and lives peaceably with cats.

Despite her reserved ways at the moment, we know there’s know there’s a silly, excitable, playful girl lurking in there somewhere. How?? Because when you take a toy out, Ada positively
lights up and becomes a different dog! Ada LOVES playing fetch and LOVES toys. The second you say "Ready?" she assumes position and is eager for you to throw whatever you’ve got on hand.  Once she fetches the toy, she starts shaking it and dances around like a bucking bull!  She has also been caught hoarding toys, socks & shoes in her crate. Ha! For Ada, fetching and toys are going to be crucial to helping her develop confidence and overcome her fears, and at least a game a day will be essential for this moderate energy girl!

In case you hadn’t noticed - Ada is a BEAUTIFUL girl, a real head-turner, with long flowing hair and a proud, bold look to her. She could possibly be mixed with a Rough Collie (think Lassie) and will need a little grooming/brushing to keep her looking beautiful. Ada is a bright girl but right now, her fears often get the best of her. Despite living on her own for so long, however, Ada already has some of the most important skills and her foster mom is working on teaching her more. She’s housetrained and, like most of our shy dogs, loves to hide out in her crate, which is a safe place that she prefers to be in while adjusting to life in a home.  She is learning how to walk on a leash which is taking longer than usual because it frightens her and as a defense mechanism, Ada will flip on to her back and curl her legs in like a possum.  She is making good progress, however, and now pulls "possum" a lot less during leash training, or when overwhelmed in general. Although we don’t think Ada will ever be a social butterfly, we do think she will continue to progress significantly in the right hands!

Ada is a wonderful girl who deserves a wonderful family to call her own. With calm, patient, and confidence-building adopters, who are willing to take it slow but also know when a little push through her fear is needed, Ada is sure to continue to grow and blossom. She will need a family who has a little more time and patience than most, but those willing to help this lovely girl along will no doubt be rewarded with a quiet, sweet companion who lights up at playtime! If you have a soft spot for the underdog and have the time and patience to help a very shy girl, Ada may be the one for you.

Ada is spayed, fully vetted and living in a loving foster home near Loveland, CO.
