My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Leo is being fostered in Frederick County, Maryland. He's been patiently waiting for a home of his own.

Leo is quite a gem! His story is a sad one (read below). I can honestly say that these pictures do him a big injustice as he is much cuter in person!

Leo is about ten months old, and loves everyone he comes in contact with. He is very friendly. Leo also loves to play. He gets along well with other dogs and seems good with cats. He does have a high prey drive (PBGV's are actually hounds), so he cannot be placed into a home where he could get into "trouble."

This boy is very gentle, and you can easily take a bone out of his mouth. He weighs about thirty five pounds and is an absolutely gorgeous, not to mention cute as a button little dog!

Leo bonds very easily, a true velcro. He does not like to be left alone and will follow his person all over the house. He seems to love children. However because of his tendency to dart out the door, we feel it may be best if he goes to a home with only older children. Small children could accidently leave the door open, etc.

Poor Leo has already been in two different homes (that we know of) in his short little life. He got lost from his original owner and was picked up by Animal Control as a stray. Sadly, no one ever came to claim him. Then someone adopted him from the shelter, and returned him after only a week. His new guardian left for vacation the same day she adopted him! She left poor Leo in a boarding kennel while she was gone. He was terrifed and very confused. When she returned from vacation, she decided she didn't have time for a dog and returned him to the shelter KNOWING he might never make it out. WHY didn't she think of this BEFORE she got a dog??? Because of the trauma Leo has suffered from these two experiences, it has left him with seperation anxiety. He is absolutely terrifed of being left again and it is very sad for him. Leo is slowly learning to trust again and it is amazing how sweet this dog still is after all he has been put through. There is not one mean bone in his body. He is just an awesome dog.

Because of Leo's seperation anxiety, he can only be adopted to a family who has at least one member home most of the time. He is crate trained as long as he can see you - but CANNOT be crated while you are gone - as he could easily hurt himself trying to escape to find you. Leo needs an understanding guardian who will have patience while he is learning that not all humans are bad.

We have found that Leo is extremely smart, as most PBGV's are. He can easily figure out how to get out of a crate or a fence. So you'll need to have a tall fence to be considered to adopt him.

Leo is truly one of the sweetest dogs I have ever known. He so much wants to have a family he can call his own. He wants to trust again and only wants someone of his own to love. Leo is a very faithful and loyal dog and he deserves that in return. I just cannot put into words what a sweet, sweet soul he is.

The ideal home for Leo would be with someone who has experience with his breed. This is not a requirement, but is desireable. Please contact us if you think you are the person Leo needs.

Please Note:

1) We MUST receive your completed adoption application FIRST before proceeding.

2) We check all references. If your application has been approved, we will then find a volunteer in your area to do your home visit. This volunteer does not have access to our dogs and will not bring the dog to your home visit.

3) If your home visit goes well, you can then adopt the dog.

4) Our minimum adoption donation for most dogs is $250, $200 for *some* of our seniors, and $275 for puppies younger than a year old.

5) PLEASE REMEMBER WE ARE VOLUNTEERS AND WE DO NOT RECEIVE PAYMENT FOR OUR TRAVEL COSTS, ETC. Therefore, please do not ask or expect us to meet you several times with the dog before you adopt him or her.
