My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sammy is a gorgeous 5 year old red standard male from a line of champions (we knew his breeder and unfortunately she has passed away).

His former owner says: "Sammy is very affectionate. Definitely a lap dog and loves to sleep in your bed if you let him. However, he is not a needy or neurotic dog. He just loves people and affection and being the center of attention.

He is quite funny and mischievous. This is mostly fun but can be trying at times. For example, he must sit before he is allowed to get on the sofa. He knows this but he always tries to get on the sofa without sitting. He tries any number of ploys to get you to submit. He will crouch in the hopes that you will be tricked into thinking he has sat. He will try to stare you down without sitting. He will eventually sit but not look at you so that you will not see any submission in his eyes. Or, he emits a whimper as he sits as if the pain of obedience is so much to bear. Once he is in your lap, he is a dream.

He must be kept on a leash outdoors because he loves running off on his own especially to chase animals. He will not go very far and will come back but I do worry that he will get hurt one day so hang on to that leash.

Commands he knows are: come, sit, down, leave it, stop, stay, wait. He also will follow your palm but I have not taken this very far.

He likes other adults and will try to win them over. A bit of a seducer. He dislikes children and cats

He LOVES exploring the inside of other peoples homes and stores. He just likes checking them out and does no harm or marking in this situation. (A least so far.)

He will bark at anyone wearing a hood or a big hat. He thinks people on bicycles are creatures not people. Sometimes he runs for the spokes so this is another moment when a firm grip on the leash is important.

He likes meeting other dogs and is a great day care participant.

He is very interested in scents--more than our other Dachshund. Some of his favorite moments are sitting in my lap outside and just taking in the smells.

We have avoided giving him human food but at the very beginning I made the mistake of giving some of my scrambled eggs--about a tablespoon. Then I let him lick the plate. I still do this because he is crazy happy about it. He does not expect any other human food although he lingers in the kitchen just in case the cook drops something on the floor.

Sammy sleeps in a crate under a small Polartec Blanket. It is amazing to see how he manages to build a cocoon for himself. He loves to sleep in a burrow bed during the day and we will give you one.

He was housebroken before the new dog and their is a good chance that he can if he lives in a house where there is no need to mark.

He loves riding in cars and will sit in his booster seat watching the world go by. A great car dog. He will go into stores on a lease and behave (unless he sees children). His favorite store is Orvis.

Sammy is not a big fan of walking except in town and urban environments. But in this environments he is quite a vigorous walker. Go figure. He doesn't go out in rain until this last year so cross your fingers. We do have a rain coat for him. He dislikes cold and we have a warm windproof coat too.

He has been chipped.

He is fastidious about cleaning his paws and you will see him hard at working cleaning them. This is not indicative of any problem that we know of.

Sammy was very healthy on all counts."
