My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Eli needs a foster home ASAP. Please read about Eli's needs below and contact us if you can help.

This is the story of a Bronx little boy who loves life. A boy like most young boys who likes to run and play. Although he is not your typical kid, he has a lot in common with his human counterparts. His name is Elton. This Elton is as smart but not as popular as that other Elton, and his favorite song is "I'm Still Standing." Eli, as we like to call him, is a SURVIVOR. Before he was picked up by cops and taken to a kill shelter, Eli was a stray in the Bronx -- abandoned by his owner. But that ordeal did not make him bitter or hostile. On the contrary, he is as sweet as his sweet chocolate coloring. He could sing "I Want Love." If you would adopt Eli, then his song would be "Someone Saved My Life Tonight."

Eli is a puppy at heart, approx 18-20 months-old. He is extremely focused on his toys. He loves his knotted rope toys and tennis balls like they were the only left on earth. Eli would make a wonderful running partner and would probably excel at agility or Frisbee.

Eli is a dog for someone who will enjoy training him and who understands the value of both limit setting and being a strong pack leader. He is one of those confident, smartypants dogs that will take advantage of soft handling and a pushover owner. Eli must be obedience trained and given clear messages via the steps in the deference protocol about who is the pack leader. The proper permanent or foster guardian should be familiar with canine behavior, the hierarchy of the pack, and be willing to faithfully implement the deference protocol work. Since Eli is energetic and young, we believe he would thrive if owned or fostered by a physically active person, i.e. a jogger who would take him for brisk walks/runs. He would also benefit from some interactive toys that would allow him to use that keen mind that is so apparent when interacting with him.

Eli is very handsome. His coat is red and his eyes are amber. His ears like the Pharaoh Hound's are large and stand erect. He weighs approx 60 pounds. Eli is neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. He's housetrained and crate trained.

Potential adopters will have access to Eli's temperament evaluation by a professional behaviorist. Visit Eli's web page to view slide show of the dog's beautiful pictures: http://members.petfinder.com/~NY382/Eli/Eli.html
