My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hunter is a very handsome dark sable sheltie with the most interesting eyes. You can't help but to fall in love with him immediately. He will charm you with his personality and playfulness!

AGE: 7 years young (he looks and acts much younger!)
SIZE: Hunter is at a healthy weight at 25.8 lbs.
TEMPERAMENT: Hunter loves people. He is snuggly and quite independent.
FENCE: A secure wood, chain link or vinyl fence with no gaps, with secure gates, and with direct access from the house is required. Hunter was surrendered due to being a runner at his previous home. His adopter will need to be vigilant with Hunter around open doors.
DOGS: Hunter gets along with the other dogs in his foster home, but could also be someone's one & only. He is a bit greedy about food with one of his foster siblings, so Hunter eats gated in another room without issue.
CATS: Unknown - no cats in his foster home. We were told Hunter is cat-friendly.
KIDS: Unknown - no kids in his foster home. Given Hunter's inclination to dart out a door, a home without children is best.
CRATE-TRAINED: Hunter prefers to be outside of his crate, but does fine gated into a room when his foster mom is not home.
HOUSE-TRAINED: Yes.
OBEDIENCE TRAINING: Unknown if he had any formal training previously. Hunter knows basic commands and has begun attending class with his foster mom. Hunter is a dream to work with in class. The trainers say that he works like a show dog. He heels and sits so nicely and learns quickly, and keeps his eye on his handler the whole time. His adopter will need to commit to taking Hunter to formal training and continue to enforce a "wait" at the door before he is released into the fenced yard.
LEASH MANNERS: Hunter walks well on a leash. He was reported to be reactive to cars, so his adopter may need to work on helping Hunter to refocus on his person during walks through the use of positive reinforcement (treats).
CAR RIDES: Hunter is a little verbal in the car. He does not like to be crated, so for his safety, a doggie seatbelt will need to be used if he is not in a crate.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Hunter likes to play ball and go for walks. He has a good amount of energy for a dog his age.
BARKING: Average for a Sheltie. Hunter's bark is a low tone and very soft. He is pretty entertaining when he howls.
HEALTH ISSUES: No known health issues. The veterinarians who have examined him stated that he appears much younger.

Hunter will be a wonderful friend to someone who can keep him safe. He promises to serenade you! Hunter is fostered in the Fargo, ND area.

For more information on our adoption process (which includes an application, references and a home visit prior to meeting dogs) or to see other Shelties available for adoption, please visit our website at www.mnsheltierescue.org, or contact us for the adoption application. Hunter's adoption fee is $250.00, and he is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested and on heartworm preventative (during heartworm season), had a dental, is microchipped, has been bathed and brushed, etc. All of our dogs are indoor dogs and are not to be left outside unattended (not even in a fenced yard, if the adopter is not at home).

***The Sheltie's bio explains the type of home that will best meet that Sheltie's needs, and indicates if a fence is required, and whether the Sheltie can be placed with children, dogs or cats. Please note that we cannot guarantee the availability of the Shelties in our program, and that our priority is to meet the needs of the Shelties in our care.***
