My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Notes: Lulu, hound/pointer mix, 1.5 to 2 years old, 50 pounds, spayed female, short white coat with speckles.

Lulu (full name: Louise) and her sister were found wandering around downtown Frederick. Thin and dirty, they had clearly been on their own for a few weeks. When approached by a good Samaritan, Lulu did not need to be asked twice.

Now safely ensconced in a foster home, Lulu is still getting her bearings about what it means to live with humans. She is already crate trained and is making great strides in her housetraining. Initially fearful, once she has warmed up to someone, she has made a friend for life, and will wag her tail so enthusiastically that her entire body wags.

Lulu is a dog of sweet and innocent enthusiasms, as illustrated by her own special version of the game "catch." She goes after the ball like a champ, but once it is secured, she celebrates her triumph by dancing around with the ball rather than returning it. Likewise, she adores going on a walk, but hasn't quite mastered the part about pulling.

Lulu's guileless wholehearted joy extends beyond her human friends to include other dogs. However, she is a no-go with cats -- not because she would harm them deliberately, but because she simply does not understand that cats are not odd, slightly crabby dogs, and she'll never stop trying to get them to roughhouse with her. Trust us when we say that your cat would not forgive you for bringing Lulu home.

In some ways, Lulu reminds us of the new little girl in school, who doesn't know how cute and loveable she is and who is desperately worried about making new friends and fitting in. It will be her adopter's job to provide Lulu with encouragement and structure so she knows what is expected of her. It will also be important to fight the urge to cuddle and console and baby Lulu when she is frightened of a new experience, and instead reassure her through your calm demeanor that there is nothing to worry about. Don't worry --there will be plenty of other opportunities to snuggle and cuddle this little girl -- she'll make sure of it.

If you are interested in adopting Lulu, please e-mail dmconrad44@hotmail.com. Lulu is spayed and up to date on vaccines.
Please note: Lulu is available through the Animal Welfare League of Frederick. Her foster is a long-time Hedgesville Hounds volunteer and we therefore can recommend this dog as if she were one of our own.
