I would like you to meet the gorgeous, copper-colored, and exuberant, Miss Penny (Penny for short)! Penny found her way onto my in-law’s property and into our hearts in November. She was the skinniest dog we’ve ever seen, weighing only 29 pounds.

Despite her frail figure, she was one of the most loving and sweet spirited dogs I’ve ever come across. She packed on weight quickly and became fast friends with the kids (age ranges 9-1), dogs, cats, and chickens living on the property. As she regained her health, she also regained her pride and became the happy, exuberant, and energetic pup that she is today.

According to the vet, Penny is about 1 ½ years old and weighs in at 60 pounds. She is a gorgeous copper color with a little brindling, and her most striking feature…her penny colored, big, loving eyes. She is shy on first meeting and responds well to both men and women, although she is a bit more tentative with men at first. However, with a quick chin scratch, head pat, and maybe a belly rub, she’s yours!

These days, while waiting for her forever home, Penny lives with my family, which includes 2 dogs (1 male pit bull and 1 female Carolina Dog), my husband, and our 1 year old son. She loves her foster brother and sister, gives kisses to the baby, and has a new favorite rope/tire chew toy. She loves to chase toys and we’re working on a solid game of fetch.

Penny surprised us all by how well she walks on a leash. So well, in fact, I think it might be time for my dogs to take a refresher course. She does like to chase the stray cats in the neighborhood, but responds fairly well to a gentle tug and some basic “leave it” commands. Just the other day, on one of her quick walks, we were approached by two large male dogs that had gotten out of their yard. Penny didn’t seem the least bit phased. She stayed calm, let the dogs sniff to their hearts content, and then went about her walk like all was right with the world.

We’re working hard on the basic commands and she certainly aims to please. Penny is very food motivated and will dance around at the mere suggestion of a treat. She’s shown no food guarding or aggression towards people or dogs. Penny likes to chew, so it’s best to be sure she has a variety of chew toys to keep her interest. She’s a quiet girl, although she will alert bark if she hears a noise she wants you to know about.

Penny is very snuggly and would probably be content to lie and your feet and get belly rubs all day long. She bonds quickly to people and shows her excitement with tongue lolling bounces (we’re working on keeping all four feet on the ground). She is also kennel trained and likes spending time curled up with a snuggly blanket.

Being a young, energetic pit bull, Penny needs a daily walk or two and some time to play in a yard. Our typical day starts with breakfast and a 20 minute walk. Then it is play time with me and my hubby and some time hanging with the other pups before I leave work. When I get home, Penny eats her dinner time, plays some fetch, wrestles with her foster brother, gets another walk and then it is off to bed. This routine seems to be working well and she’s starting to understand what comes next.

In short, Penny is one energetic, loving, trusting, and resilient pup that deserves to be in a forever home with people (and maybe a dog brother or sister) who can give her lots and lots of snuggles, walks, adventures, belly rubs, and a game or two of fetch every day.
