My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Catz Jazz Rescue assists as many unfortunate & abandoned cats as possible, while advocating the message of compassion towards animals and responsible pet ownership. Catz Jazz strives to be one of the best Austin cat rescue operations by providing comfort & care for each and every animal coming into our rescue with consideration of their individual situations. Our goal is to find life-long companions for the rescued cats in our care.

Read about Smokey: Mokie (formerly Smokey) came to us at about 8 weeks of age by way of a compassionate gentleman who rescued her from an airport hanger in June where she had become trapped for at least 5 days according to the info we received. We suspect she had been dumped near the airport as there are no residences within close proximity that she could have wandered from and she was a friendly, albeit frightened kitten when rescued.

On 6/8/12, a Friday, concerned fellow Ed approached an airport employee to request entrance to the hanger the kitten was trapped in after hearing her cries. Ed and the airport employee did go to the hanger but the kitten being naturally scared, had hid. Thankfully Ed was persistent and returned on Saturday 6/9/12 and gained entrance to the hanger and with the help of 2 other men who keep planes at this airport managed to coax this precious Lynx point siamese kitten out from under a large mower.

Ed took the kitten home where his wife Teresa took over care of the kitten. She had been named Smokey though we have renamed her Mokie as it seems to fit her better. Teresa provided the kitten with lots of love and food, even tried to bathe her as she had gotten a bit greasy in the hanger where she had been existing on crickets she caught/found but probably no water. For several days after her rescue she pooped out nothing but cricket parts. Ed & Teresa would have loved to keep this kitten (they had adopted two cats from us about five years ago) but knew their now 7 year old cats would never allow this youngster into the family so they contacted us to take her into rescue which of course we did without even meeting Mokie as we all just wanted the best for this deserving kitten and Ed & Teresa knew she would be in good hands till she is placed in her forever home.

Mokie was promptly seen by a vet and has been with us since June 9th and is doing very well, as she has put on weight and is playing with other foster kittens, though she is a very quiet, reserved kitten, but can be playful. She does like to be with her human and sleep on the bed so we want to find Mokie a very secure home where she will NEVER be abandoned or left alone for long periods of time and preferably be able to live with at least one kitty buddy.

When told about Mokie's saga we were rather disturbed to learn that the airport employee approached for entry into the hanger said that he was aware of the kitten crying in distress and had been for days, though he apparently did nothing to help get the kitten out of harm's way until Ed approached him for entry into the hanger...

In this Texas heat, an animal being trapped can be a cruel death sentence.

And then even this airport employee's lack of compassion for the kitten was obvious to her rescuers. There is a silver lining here in that the Georgetown Airport has now put into place a policy requiring employees to immediately contact animal control in the event an animal falls into this situation in the future so that hopefully no other animal will be put through unnecessary distress as Mokie was.

It is important to note that without concerned people acting quickly to rescue or report animals in danger IMMEDIATELY, many animals suffer needlessly.

An animal crying for help IS AN EMERGENCY CIRCUMSTANCE and should be treated as much.

The world can always stand more compassion, especially for the innocent animals who depend on us for their protection.

Mokie is one of the lucky ones and she will give back a lifelong love and companionship to someone who is willing to provide for her for all her life knowing what a different fate she could have had.

Smokey's estimated D.O.B. is April 16, 2012
Dated added: 07/7/12 Photos current as of: 07/7/12

Smokey has passed a vet exam, is up-to-date with age-appropriate vaccinations, has been treated for any medical needs, given preventative treatment for internal parasites/fleas, has tested negative for FeLV/FIV and is litter-box trained. Now she just needs a forever home!

Please note: We DO NOT advocate pediatric spay/neuter (defined as starting between six to eight weeks young or anything earlier than 4 to 6 months) due to known medical and health complications that could arise from performing alter surgeries on cats before their hormones are mature enough. We do of course promote the importance of spaying and neutering and participate in community education and advocate the spay/neuter of ALL animals and strictly enforce spay/neuter contracts on our adopted kittens when they become mature enough. Adopters are encouraged to visit any vet they are comfortable with as long as the procedure is done and a copy of receipt of the surgery is supplied to Catz Jazz within the discussed time frame.

Donate a Kuranda cat bed to Catz Jazz
Donate a Kuranda Bed to Catz Jazz

If you can't adopt Smokey, would you consider donating a Kuranda cat bed to her while she waits for her forever person to find her?

Our rescued cats love to sleep on Kuranda cat beds because of their orthopedic comfort and we love them because they are stackable, allowing high perches for shy cats while increasing the amount of floor space, but due to our already constricted operating budget, we just don't have enough for everyone to sleep on.

When you donate a Kuranda cat bed to us, you will give an Austin rescue cat a place to sleep in comfort and have a bed to dream on while they patiently wait for their forever home.

We also gratefully accept donations of much-needed items from our
Catz Jazz Wish List.

Thank you so much for helping us out.

Any donation, no matter how small is a big help and is greatly appreciated.
