My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

BREED: dobie mix COLOR/COAT: black and brown short coat SEX: Female ESTIMATED AGE: 6 to 9 years of age best guess SIZE: 90 pounds

PERSONALITY: Nana's sweetness and gentle goodness could melt anyone's heart. She is a joyful, big bundle of affection and hope, and she would reward the commitment of a loving adoptive home with the full measure of a very great heart.

As we continue in our narrative depiction of Nana, we cheerfully acknowledge our overt efforts to tug at your heartstrings. This is deliberately intended, and were it to result in your adopting Nana, it would be for your own good.

Nana is one of the very last dogs who remain from a seizure of 150 dogs over a year ago. She was taken into protective custody by Animal Control, and while other dogs went into foster care and were eventually adopted, Nana stayed behind. This is probably due to her being older and larger, and a mixed breed dog. It certainly does not reflect her infinite merit.

Nana lived in a cage at the pound for an entire year. She did so without losing hope, and without a murmur of complaint. Already an older dog when she went into safe-keeping, her remaining years were precious. But she made the most of this situation, as she doubtless made the most of the plight that came before the seizure - demonstrating patience and a gentle fortitude and good will.

We have even watched Nana comfort and encourage some of the younger and less confident dogs who were part of the seizure, and it is this gentle kindness and wisdom that earned her name, after the beloved character in Peter Pan.

Although of course we can't recommend our Nana for a job as a childcare professional, the point is, she belongs to that marvelous category of dogs who gives more than she asks for, who is finely attuned to her humans, and whose heart swells with love and concern for those whom she cares about. Truly, there could be no higher praise.

Nana is now with our organization, and she continues to touch us with her joyful acceptance, and her gratitude for the smallest things. She delights in the small stash of toys that are hers, in the feel of the sun on her back, in the soft bed she now sleeps on.She especially adores her group of toys that squeak. And when she hears her name, her eyes shine with happiness and love.

She is in wonderful health, and while she may be approaching her golden years, she lives each day with a satisfaction and pleasure that defy measurement.

She is housetrained, walks briskly on lead, sits and shakes, and she is wonderful with all people, dogs, and children. She is not a dog whom we recommend for a home with cats, however.

Many would feel that adopting Nana was an act of altruism, and given her age, we can say that adopting Nana is a courageous act of love. But in the case of Nana, who greatly needs and deserves a good home, we can also say unreservedly that what blesses one will bless all. By this dear creature's capacity to trust we have all been inspired. Nana would reward the commitment of a loving adopter with all the love in her great and good heart.
