Bella is with 4 Legged Love because, sadly, her adopter turned out to be allergic to her.
Bella is very nervous and very unsure about being in new places and with new people, she is quite the opposite once she warms up and learns she can trust you. Bella is a pretty bouncy, outgoing young dog with her person/people. She can jump at least waist high and would be a great agility dog, she easily jumps in to her foster families arms when excited to see them or when nervous. She loves, loves, loves to run and play and just generally be with people. This is an active young girl who loves to get out for brisk daily walks and play time at a fenced off leash area be it a doggy park, fenced property or fenced tennis court not in use. She travels well in the car, she is crate trained and house trained though she needs a little time getting used to a new families potty routine. Bella can be shy at first but tends to get along well with other dogs her size, bigger bouncy dogs intimidate and scare her, she has been around cats and is very respectful of them usually ignoring unless the feline initiates gentle play, she is good with older respectful children but because she is so nervous and takes a while to settle in and trust people Bella is best in a home with no kids under 16yrs.
From Bella’s foster mom in Toronto: (City Life) She's actually doing really well, in terms of how quickly she is "getting" city life. The walk to get to the fenced-in park is about 5-6 blocks down College (a busy street) and she's done it a number of times now. The first two times, I had to carry her part of the way because I could see that she was so stressed out. But she's been doing much, much better now. She insists that I am between her and any person we pass by, but she's not running from side to side anymore, and she'll walk right beside my ankle if I ask her to.
(With other dogs) She's been slowly coming out of her shell at the park. She likes chasing dogs who are fetching things. You know, dogs who aren't paying attention to her at all. She'll run after them and jump over then and cut them off and stuff but as soon as they pay attention to her, she gets scared. She's much better with smaller dogs. I can tell she WANTS to play but it's oh so scary. My friend came over with her male Cavalier Spaniel who is the same age as Bella and it went SO WELL. He's very submissive and was a perfect playmate for her. After about 30 minutes of her making weird terrier play moves at him, she finally relaxed and they settled into a play that was very flowing, for about two hours, on my bed. It was super cute. She even rolled on her back and let him climb onto her belly many times while they were playing!
(Over all at this point) I think she's learning really quickly and she'll keep learning. She's fine with people in the park as long as they don't try to pet her. Well, if they're women trying to pet her, she'll just keep like a 3ft distance. But if it's a man, she'll run and hide behind my legs. She'd be great at agility because all she cares about is whether or not what she is doing is making me happy. She literally looks at me to "check" before she does anything. And her and my cat have advanced to playing hide & seek around the apartment, it's so adorable. My cat even let Bella lick her yesterday! She has a LOT of energy. I think it's going to be important to her happiness if she can have some really really good running time every day. And someone who is committed to continuing to expose her to new people and new dogs. I think she can break these fears she has, and I can tell that she wants to, but someone is going to have to be pretty invested in working with her, I think. Probably Not a first-time dog owner type dog.
Bella is just such a fun little dog and it’s great to see her shine when she learns to trust her people. She really needs to find a dog savvy, patient person or mature couple that can take her for training classes with a proper trainer to help build her confidence and trust. She also needs to continue getting used to the big, sometimes scary, world so daily walks on busier streets and exposure to lots of new things on a regular basis until she is comfortable with her surroundings and all the things in it like bikers, busses, baby strollers going by etc. We’d love to see her with a patient, mature person or couple in a house with a fenced yard where she can play but she is also fine in an apartment with daily exercise.
