My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

FOSTER LOCATION: Kayville, UT

Meet Toothless! He is a 2 year old, 6.5 pound, male Chihuahua/Min Pin mix.

(Explanation of the name "Toothless" for this little guy - We did not name him Toothless to get the interest of small people! It just fits. The movie "How to Train Your Dragon" is about a boy and a dragon (named Toothless). The dragon becomes injured and cannot fly anymore without his missing piece of tail. The boy invents a prosthetic for the dragon, and saves his life. However, without the boy the dragon in helpless; the boy also needs the dragon to figure out where he is supposed to go with his life. They saved each other. To make it short, they need each other to live a happy life. I think our Toothless is kind of the same. Silly but fitting.)

This little guy has gone through a lot in his short little life. When he was picked up as a stray, his left hind leg was badly injured. The vet decided that his quality of life would be better if the leg was just removed. So on October 11th, this cute little guy went from four to three! He gets around just wonderfully. So much so that we think that his leg must have been injured for quite some time. He has wonderful muscle tone in his right leg. He can jump up on the couch or the bed really quite well. He doesn't even seem to notice that he's just a little different!

In the shelter, after such a major surgery, Toothless was very stressed and scared. He wasn't doing well and the shelter staff was afraid that he wasn't adoptable, so Fuzzy Pawz Rescue stepped in and put him into a foster home to give him a chance. He is doing wonderful. He came right in and tried to play with the two large dogs in the foster home. One of which, Watson, weighs 80 pounds! If he can get Watson to lie on the floor, Toothless will start play growling and jumping all over Watson! Licking, play biting and barking at him! It is so cute to watch how happy he is!

He seems to pick one person to be his favorite, but has been wonderful with the small children, 9 y/o-boy, 5 y/o-boy and 4 y/o-girl, and also with the 17 year old girl. Men are another story. He has been here for a week, and just last night was the first time he willingly let my husband reach out and touch him. He only allowed it for a few seconds before it was too overwhelming and he ran away. On Halloween, I was out trick-or-treating with my kids and Toothless got out the door and ran to find me. My husband had to grab him, fully expecting to be bitten, so that he wouldn't get hit by a car or worse. Toothless did nip him, but didn't draw blood or even leave a mark. He isn't aggressive, but he steers clear of men. In his week here, he has met probably 6 or 7 men close up, plus all the trick-or-treat daddy's. He was not aggressive to them, but if they were to corner him or grab him, I could see him trying to protect himself by biting. That is how totally terrified he is. If he went to a home with a man, it would definitely take him a few weeks to warm up to them, and they'd have to realize that they don't get to push it because that will just set him back. He would do great in a home with a single woman. He loves women! I would prefer a family with older or no kids, first because he is a bit fragile, and second because kids can be overwhelming and don't always know how to approach a timid dog. I know he does well with my kids, but they have been working with random dogs their entire lives, and have been raised to be respectful and don't even try to touch the dogs if they're asked not to. We want to find Toothless the best home for HIM, so we are willing to look into all applicants, but just wanted to forewarn that it is going to all depend on what Toothless wants and how he reacts to the applicant family. Also, before you could be approved, he would have to meet every person living in the home.

Toothless has a wonderful personality. He seems to be pretty well potty trained but has had a few accidents, which is normal for an animal in a new home. He knows the doggy door great, so I am not sure how he lets you know that he needs to go out. I have seen him go stand at the door. He is great with dogs and cats (as long as the other dogs aren't chasing the cats!) and loves to ride in the car. He is a bit less secure than other dogs while riding in a car, and just needs his own blanket so that he can lie down and feel secure. He doesn't run away when he gets out the front door, (unless he's left with a "terrifying" man) and he walks pretty well on a leash. He's not a real big barker, but does bark when someone comes to the door, or if the other dogs are barking at anything. One of my favorite things about him is that if you start howling, he will howl with you. Some people would not find that as amusing as I do, but they just need NOT howl and he won't howl!

In addition to little Toothless' amputation, he has been brought up to date on vaccinations, neutered and micro-chipped. His sutures have been removed and he is ready to go home!
